Job Details

Overview
We are seeking a mid-level Data Engineer to support a Proof of Concept (PoC) evaluation of two enterprise backup solution vendors Cohesity and Commvault. This role will focus on building and testing database environments in a lab setting to assess the effectiveness, compatibility, and performance of backup and restore operations across multiple database platforms.
The ideal candidate will have broad database familiarity (RDBMS and NoSQL), strong analytical and communication skills, and hands-on experience working in Red Hat environments. Oversight and direction will be provided by the internal Verizon project lead.

Key Responsibilities
Database Environment Setup: Build, configure, and manage test environments for RDBMS (Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (Redis, MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase) databases across physical servers and Red Hat OpenStack/OpenShift platforms.
Data Population: Load representative sample data into databases for testing.
Backup & Restore Testing: Execute full, incremental, and point-in-time restore tests using Cohesity and Commvault backup tools.
Performance Evaluation: Track and analyze backup/restore metrics, resource utilization, and configurations for performance benchmarking.
Failure Simulation: Conduct controlled database failure tests and validate restore accuracy.
Compatibility & Configuration Documentation: Create detailed compatibility matrices, configuration reports, and firewall requirement summaries.
Reporting: Provide weekly status reports, testing summaries, and final evaluation documentation.
Collaboration: Coordinate closely with DBAs, infrastructure teams, and the designated Verizon project lead to ensure alignment and progress tracking.
Vendor Coordination: Engage with Cohesity and Commvault vendor contacts for technical discussions, documentation, and troubleshooting.

Required Qualifications
Experience: 3 5 years as a Data Engineer, Database Administrator, or Systems Engineer supporting multi-database environments.
Database Knowledge: Familiarity with Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, and/or Couchbase.
Red Hat Expertise: Hands-on experience working in Red Hat Linux environments (OpenStack/OpenShift preferred).
Backup/Restore Operations: Experience performing database backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery (PITR).
Scripting: Basic proficiency in Python or shell scripting (Python preferred but not required).
Testing & Documentation: Ability to conduct structured testing, document configurations, and produce detailed technical reports.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to coordinate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
Certifications in any major database technology (Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, etc.)
Red Hat Certification (RHCSA or RHCE) Strongly preferred
Experience in lab or PoC testing environments
Familiarity with enterprise backup tools (Commvault, Cohesity, Veeam, etc.)

Role Type
Mid-level (hands-on execution, under guidance of senior design and architecture teams)
Lab-based testing only no production systems involved
