Controls/PLC Engineer II

A fast-growing aerospace and defense technology company is seeking a talented Controls and PLC Engineer to take ownership of a complex control system supporting advanced propulsion test facilities. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), data acquisition, and industrial automation systems. This role offers the opportunity to directly contribute to the development of high-performance propulsion technologies in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

About the Company:

This innovative aerospace company is focused on developing the next generation of hypersonic and supersonic vehicles for national defense and commercial markets. Based just outside of Boston, MA, the company leverages in-house propulsion, testing, and advanced manufacturing capabilities to rapidly prototype and validate high-speed flight systems. Backed by a mix of private investment and government R&D contracts, the team partners closely with leading research institutions and federal laboratories to accelerate development and transition to flight testing and production.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with test operators to enhance the control systems of existing test cells, improving functionality, safety, and reliability
  • Support the design and implementation of new control systems for emerging test infrastructure
  • Work alongside mechanical and propulsion engineers to select, integrate, and calibrate sensors within the facility
  • Maintain and troubleshoot actuators, sensors, and control loops in real-time test environments
  • Develop and manage control logic, sequences, and automation systems across multiple platforms
  • Maintain PLC-to-database communication systems and ensure reliable data pipelines
  • Design and update HMI interfaces for operators and engineers
  • Travel up to 10% for off-site test support as required
  • Contribute to other engineering tasks and initiatives as needed

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a controls or automation engineering role
  • Hands-on experience with industrial PLC platforms such as Beckhoff, B&R, Siemens, or equivalent
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, time-series databases (e.g., InfluxDB), and relational databases (e.g., SQL)
  • Eligibility for a U.S. DoD security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with rapidly evolving technical requirements

Preferred Skills:
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with object-oriented software development
  • Familiarity with closed-loop control systems for valves, motors, and other electromechanical hardware
  • Background in propulsion systems, fluid dynamics, or thermodynamics
  • Experience working with safety-critical systems and related standards
  • Knowledge of common sensor types, industrial wiring practices, and calibration techniques in aerospace or automotive environments
