Job Details

Job Title: Database Architect Microsoft Azure (Hybrid/Remote US Only)
Location: Richmond, VA (Remote within the U.S. allowed)
Interview: Initial Screening: Virtual (phone or video call), Technical Interview: Likely conducted via Microsoft Teams or Zoom

Job Description:

  • Design and implement Azure-native database architectures (SQL Database, Managed Instances, Cosmos DB)

  • Develop Infrastructure-as-Code using ARM templates, Bicep, or Terraform

  • Architect data solutions aligned with modern DevSecOps and CI/CD practices

  • Manage database security: data classification, masking, RBAC, and encryption

  • Design for high availability, geo-replication, and disaster recovery

  • Evaluate data storage strategies balancing performance, cost, and compliance

  • Collaborate on audit trail designs and transparency-focused data pipelines

  • Document designs for internal, legal, and public-facing audiences

  • Work in Agile/Scrum environments with full participation in DevOps workflows

Required/Desired Skills:

Experience architecting and administering enterprise-grade database systems, with at least 2 years focused on cloud-native database services in Azure Required 5 Years
Demonstrated experience designing and implementing solutions using Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and Azure Cosmos DB. Required 5 Years
Strong understanding of cloud-native design patterns, including statelessness, elasticity, and infrastructure-as-code (IaC). Required 5 Years
Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as ARM templates, Bicep, or Terraform to provision and manage database infrastructure. Required 5 Years
Familiarity with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, and Azure Monitor for integrating, orchestrating, and monitoring database workflows Required 5 Years
Deep understanding of data classification, masking, encryption, and role-based access control (RBAC) in Azure environments. Required 5 Years
Experience supporting highly scrutinized, public-facing datasets (e.g., elections-related data or open data portals), including audit trail design. Required 5 Years
Proven ability to implement and manage disaster recovery, high availability, and geo-replication strategies within Azure. Required 5 Years
Experience developing logical and physical data models that meet performance and transparency requirements while preserving data provenance. Required 5 Years
Proficiency with T-SQL for scripting, automation, and diagnostics, with a focus on automation of repeatable processes. Required 5 Years
Demonstrated ability to evaluate data storage tradeoffs (e.g., performance vs cost vs governance constraints) in a pay-as-you-go cloud environment. Required 5 Years
Experience participating in design reviews, security assessments, and data governance audits, especially where data is subject to oversight Required 5 Years
Familiarity with DevSecOps practices, including versioned schemas and the integration of database change management into CI/CD pipelines. Required 5 Years
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing technical documentation for public consumption or legal review. Required 5 Years
Experience in Agile/Scrum environments and modern DevOps workflows. Required 5 Years
