Job Description

The Role:

We are seeking an exceptional candidate to join our Active Chassis Calibration team at GM's Milford Proving Grounds. Our team develops and delivers world-class vehicle dynamics performance to our customers through innovative Chassis and Brake Controls features. The Calibration Engineer is responsible for calibrating actively controlled chassis technologies in order to provide safe and confident vehicle performance to the end user. Some examples of the features and functions include ABS, TCS, ESC and Trailer Sway Control.

Active Chassis calibration is highly dynamic work involving significant hands-on time spent driving, evaluating and calibrating vehicles, deep technical analysis of the resulting data, and efforts to continually enhance the underlying algorithm, controls and processes. In addition to in-vehicle work, calibration engineers utilize advanced tools to achieve their goals including vehicle simulation environments, HiL benches and DiL simulators. The engineers accomplish this work among a collaborative team of peer calibrators, algorithm specialists, HiL engineers, system feature owners and performance engineers.

Candidates should possess strong experience with Brake Control systems, in-vehicle performance evaluation, vehicle dynamics expertise, calibration experience in a complex technology area, along with demonstrated planning, communication, teamwork, and prioritization skills.

What You'll do:
  • Champion the safety of our employees and customers
  • Calibrate and integrate performance features to meet vehicle requirements
  • Take ownership of assigned feature on multiple programs in parallel
  • Deliver calibrations according to program milestone timing
  • Work collaboratively with algorithm team to identify and solve issues
  • Work with performance engineers to seek feedback and ensure vehicle performance meets VTS/SSTS
  • Develop common approaches and institutionalize them in Calibration Standard Work (Calibration Procedures, LADV, Deliverables, Master Calibration, etc.)
  • Improve the efficiency and quality of Standard Work by systematically driving present vehicle-based tasks into virtual, HiL and CoSim workpackages
  • Lead technical calibration peer reviews and leadership reviews for assigned program
  • Lead resolution of vehicle, plant, service, and customer issues
  • Provide input to VTS, STS, SSTS, and CTS specifications as applicable
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations and GM policies
  • Document and integrate Lessons Learned from development and field issues into algorithms and Calibration Standard Work
  • Adhere to all safety precautions and requirements, treating safety as the top priority during all work activities

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience (vehicle dynamics, chassis/driveline performance, brake controls, calibration, etc.)
  • Demonstrated initiative to drive for results in areas of innovation and new development
  • Thorough physics-based knowledge of vehicle dynamics, brake systems, chassis and propulsion integration
  • Exercises independent judgment with minimal input from leadership
  • High level of analytical problem solving skills where problems are unusual and difficult
  • Hands-on experience with vehicle dynamics and high-performance driving
  • Experience with measurement equipment, vehicle instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis
  • Position requires the ability to travel for winter testing in January / February for 6 - 8 weeks
  • Ability to travel for development and ride trips interspersed throughout the year
  • GM Level 3 Driving Credential

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
  • MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar
  • High level of oral and written communication skills
  • High level of interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Experience working in multiple functional areas within controls/calibration
  • Experience developing/executing GM standard calibration processes
  • Experience with in-vehicle development tools (INCA, NeoVI, etc)
  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience with GM simulation tools (CarSim, CarMaker)
  • GM Level 4 and OR1/OR2 driver training
