Position: Microsoft Cloud Architect
Duration: 6- Months
Location: On-Site - Herndon, VA.
Position Overview
- The Town of Herndon is seeking a hands-on and strategic Microsoft Cloud Architect to lead cloud modernization and Microsoft 365 implementation projects in alignment with the Town s IT Strategic Roadmap. The ideal candidate is a strong technical executor and communicator who can effectively engage executive leadership through compelling visuals and clear messaging.
- This is an on-site position that starts with 5 days/week at the Herndon office. Remote flexibility may be considered at a later stage, per the manager's discretion.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership Communication & Strategic Alignment
- Develop and deliver visually compelling executive presentations, dashboards, and milestone roadmaps.
- Translate complex technical topics into plain-language briefings for non-technical stakeholders.
- Present regularly to IT Steering Committees and Town leadership.
- Align IT strategy and cloud solutions with broader organizational goals and staffing plans.
Technology Implementation & Execution
- Deploy and configure Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), AD Connect, and Microsoft Intune for device lifecycle management.
Lead configuration and enforcement of:
- Zero Trust Security: MFA, Conditional Access, DLP, legacy protocol blocking.
- Microsoft Defender for Office 365: Policy tuning, Secure Score optimization.
- SharePoint Online & Teams: Migration, governance, permissions, and onboarding.
Perform root cause analysis and ongoing system optimization.
Validate technical deliverables from vendors and ensure adherence to Microsoft best practices.
Change Management & User Adoption
- Lead Town-wide change management campaigns for Microsoft 365 adoption.
- Build communication plans, training resources, department-specific FAQs, and readiness assessments.
- Track adoption metrics and refine rollout strategies based on feedback.
- Anticipate resistance and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
Project Coordination & Risk Management
- Build and maintain detailed project roadmaps, dependencies, and resource forecasts.
- Coordinate with vendors, IT staff, and departmental leads to ensure smooth execution.
- Identify and escalate risks or blockers early to maintain project velocity.
Training & Support
- Deliver training sessions, onboarding workshops, and support during key transitions.
- Create job aids, how-to guides, runbooks, and technical SOPs.
- Provide Tier 2/3 support for escalated cloud-related issues.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years in IT engineering/architecture roles, with at least 4 years focused on Microsoft 365 and cloud security.
Deep, hands-on experience with:
- Microsoft Entra ID, AD Connect, IAM
- Microsoft Intune (MDM/MAM)
- Zero Trust Security architecture and enforcement
- SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive governance
- Microsoft Defender for Office 365
Proven experience in:
- Building executive briefings and visuals for leadership
- Designing change management and user training plans
- Cross-functional project coordination and vendor management
