Job Description
Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].
The Role
The Technical Specialist for the Battery Cell Program Management Team (PMT) will be responsible for setting the commodity strategy for cathode assembly & subcomponents, electrolyte and tapes to meet cell system requirements for GM's various BEV programs. The Technical Specialist is the subject matter expert that is responsible for establishing, communicating, and assuring compliance to the GM standards for the sub-systems and components.

What You'll Do
Global Harmonization of Commodity Strategies
- Ensure global strategies are developed and defined and are globally harmonized. Ensure rich technical discussion / direction for overall commodity.
Develop & Maintain BOM Strategy & Reuse
- Commodity Benchmarking, both performance testing and physical analysis
- Develop/define and globally harmonized strategies. Ensure rich technical discussion / direction for overall commodity.
- Support battery & cell tear down activities
Lead Technology & Innovation of Commodity
- Strategy integration & cross-subsystem/component support
- Drive technology to future vision (5/10 yr plan)
- Commodity Benchmarking, both performance testing and physical analysis
- Ensure Compliance to GM Safety Practices
- Regulatory Advisory
- Create/Maintain Base Knowledge Documents
- Develop and maintain standard work templates and documents (Base Knowledge documents) for commodity
- Provide Execution Support
- Review and Approve SOR
- Support Supplier Evaluations & Design implementations
Lead/Support Problem Solving activities impacting commodity
- Provide component specific guidance on problem solving (including system level problem solving e.g. ERGO, RRAB deployment, fit/finish as appropriate)
- Participate in CAE Reviews
Support Mentoring/Coaching
- Share lessons/learnings with global stakeholders expediently
- Provide technical guidance/direction to Technical Specialists, Lead DRE, Chief Engineers & Program Team as appropriate
- Support activities to mentor, train and coach product and program engineering roles
- Create and maintain training materials
Additional Job Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering
- 10 + years of experience in battery cell design and manufacturing.
- In-depth knowledge of requirements engineering process (FMEA, BOD, BOM, etc.)
- In-depth knowledge of verification and validation processes
- In-depth knowledge of RESS Module development, testing and associated tools
- Understanding of hardware design and failure modes
- Thorough knowledge of design development and test engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations, engineering processes and procedures.
- Highly developed oral and written communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally within Battery and across other SMTs.
- Demonstrated problem solving ability.
- High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and elicit work output
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple and complex projects and assignments with autonomy and accountability for results
- Must be willing and able to travel as needed globally to support the business as needed (estimated 0-35%)
- Technical writing ability to create written engineering evaluation reports
- Strong people leadership and coaching capabilities
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Master's degree in engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Minimum 10 years of industry experience working on battery cells and 3 years of leadership experience in Li ion cathode synthesis and development at scale.
- Production execution experience working on cell design and manufacturing. Proven track record of working with original cathode vendors.
- Understanding of GD&T principles
- 2+ years of experience in Design and Release of components
- Experience with 'build to print' parts - or - experience writing specifications and managing suppliers with 'build to spec' parts
- Experience relating material level specifications to cell level targets and vice-versa
- Experience with electrochemical, structural and thermal analysis tools
- Experience managing OEMs or suppliers on critical timelines
- Experience with and/or knowledge of relevant battery control and safety technologies (e.g., Vehicle battery systems, high voltage hardware) and standards
- Design for Six Sigma Certification
- 5+ Years' experience with a major automotive OEM is a plus
