Job Description

Are you bored with the standard product development pipeline?
Do you enjoy tinkering and learning how things work?

HII Mission Technologies (HII MT) is seeking talented engineers who are excited to work in a flipped engineering environment. Our team in Roanoke, VA specializes in reverse engineering and microelectronics trust and assurance.

Candidates for this position will contribute to the team by utilizing in-house software tools to reverse engineer hardware assets provided by the U.S. government. During the analysis, engineers will identify common hardware structures like embedded processors, DSPs, filters, transceivers, data links, and decoders and determine the operational parameters they were designed for. Candidates will be exposed to and learn about design techniques across a variety of domains such as cybersecurity, electronic warfare, encryption, radar, and satellite communications.

The ideal candidate will have experience with hardware design and verification. We are particularly looking for candidates familiar with FPGA design (Quartus, Vivado, ISE), embedded system design, EDA tools (synthesis, P&R, simulation, formal verification), and/or microcontrollers. Experience with hardware hacking, side-channel attacks, and failure analysis is also valued in this position.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Candidates for this position will be responsible for performing hardware analysis and reverse engineering of DoD assets.
  • Candidates will be expected to produce clear documentation explaining the components, capabilities, and features of asset systems.
  • The use of HII proprietary tools, FPGA vendor tools, and third-party EDA tools will be necessary to perform modeling, simulation, and analysis of targeted systems.
  • Effective collaboration with teammates to produce cohesive results and create improved processes is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience.
  • You will meet our minimum qualifications if you...
Are a United States citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
Have a bachelor's ABET accredited degree with 5+ years of experience in a relevant engineering discipline
Or have a master's ABET accredited degree in a relevant engineering discipline
Have experience with Verilog, System Verilog, or VHDL
Have experience with industry-standard EDA tools and processes (synthesis, P&R, simulation, etc.)
Have the ability to learn new skills quickly

Preferred Requirements

You will go above and beyond if you...
Already possess an active security clearance
Have experience with debugging interfaces (JTAG, SWD, etc.)
Have experience with signal protocol analysis (RS232, CAN, PCIe, Gigabit serial, etc.)
Are proficient with ASIC, FPGA, or SOC design tools (Quartus, Vivado, ISE, etc.)
Are proficient with EDA tools (Synopsis, Altium, Modelsim)
Have experience with formal verification tools and methodologies (OneSpin 360, Questa, etc.)
Have experience with modifying hardware to perform non-intended tasks
Have experience bypassing encryption schemes (power glitching, side-channel attacks, etc.)
