Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].
The Role
General Motors is working to set up an entire Li Ion ecosystem to source materials and assemble defect-free Lithium-Ion cells designed for use in the automotive industry and green energy projects. We are looking for a hands-on experienced Cell Engineer to join our New Products Group.
The candidate will work and collaborate with other members in Advanced Cell Technology, Execution, Advanced Battery Pack, Purchasing, Cell Prototyping and Commercialization. The candidate will focus on cell level concept generation, cell optimization and selection and integration in battery pack for performance, cost reduction, and mass production. This work will utilize advanced analytical methods/tools in collaboration with manufacturing and computational chemistry experts to create innovative new product solutions. Major responsibilities include defining common cell strategy for all balanced architecture programs, creating standard work templates for cell integration and virtual design, development and validation input parameter generation for virtual analysis. You'll be responsible for Balance of Architecture (BA) program cell requirements generation for RFI, RFQ's for all BA programs working along with the subject matter experts. The candidate should be capable of working with senior leadership to answer technical questions in a very dynamic work environment as well as capable of handling data requests in short notice from internal and external customer/ partner.

What You'll Do
- Develop the battery cell technology for the next generation battery pack in the cross-functional group together with suppliers or third party in Advanced Technical Work (ATW) or Balance of Architecture (BA) phase.
- Architect, mature and develop the battery cell from initial product requirements and concepts through to design & release of prototype cell for future production vehicles.
- Define the cell requirements of new products by translating the battery pack sub-system technical specifications, cell technology roadmap and benchmark learnings.
- Conceptualize cell proposal and select cell chemistry, form factor, cell size that can meet battery pack packaging, performance, crashworthiness, thermal, power, thermal runaway and propagation targets.
- Conduct design synthesis to optimize the electrode design by using design of experience (DOE) techniques and perform the trade-off studies among the key cell performance indicators and recommend cell design for optimal performance and cost.
- Collaborate well with computational analysis teams to predict cell performance and evaluate feasibility of unique design options.
- Identify the potential technical challenges to demonstrate the "Look ahead behavior" upfront and develop traditional or innovative solutions with evidence in timely manner.
- Work with System Engineering to monitor and enforce compliance with Cell Supplier/Technology Partners and internal requirements as required.
- Lead cell development, verification and validation internally, with suppliers or third party
- Deliver prototype cells, create test plans, schedule, and manage testing internally or with independent third parties to characterize cell performance, safety, life and abuse.
- Collaborate with battery pack and module team to design cell mechanical interface as it related to the battery pack integration.
- Collaborate with computational analysis team to centralize cell simulation inputs for cell design synthesis.
- Develop project timing, requirements, budget, statement of design work, IP and manufacturing system impact, risks, system safety, energy value assessment, business case, concept ideation and selection, evaluation criteria, analysis and test and validation/verification for advance technology to production project.
- Coordinate with internal GM departments to meet project deliverables. This includes: (1) Lead internal reviews to ensure plans and progress are evident and visible; (2) Actively engage with departments' leadership to identify issues/risks and solutions; (3) Develop risk management plans and oversee their execution; (4) Develop strategies for cost innovation; drive down cost at every opportunity; (5) Escalate issues as appropriate.
- Ensure Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Robust Design, Reliability and Optimization are foremost at each stage of the project.
- Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA, BOD, BOM, BOP, BOE development and discussions to feed forward all project learning.
- Embrace and leverage math-based tools, Finite Element, machine learning, numerical methods, statistics for design, project management, scheduling, and cost driver sensitivity.
- Be the in-house expert in maintaining a robust and inclusive safety environment in own area of responsibility.

Additional Job Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Masters in mechanical, chemical or electrical engineering
- Minimum 7 years of energy storage, automotive electrification experience leading projects with external supplier/partners through complete product development cycles.
- Demonstrated budgeting and on-time, accurate payments related to spending forecasts.
- Extensive experience with pouch, prismatic, and cylindrical cell design and cell chemistries.
- Proficient in employing DOE approach to evaluate cell electrochemical, thermal, thermal runaway, structural performance.
- Sound knowledge of cells, modules, and pack for electrical vehicle
- Familiar with battery pack attributes as it relates to batter cell design including pack energy, power, DCFC, safety, durability/reliability.
- Ability to extrapolate cell thermal, thermal runaway, power, DCFC, life simulation in the battery pack and recommend cell designs.
- Proficiency in the cell electrode design to meet the cell requirements.
- Demonstrated experience writing winning proposals, development agreements and executive summaries.
- Demonstrated experience writing Statements of Development Work (SODW) and Statement of Requirements (SOR)
- Excellent communicator, mentor, resourceful, and mindful of time management
