Location: This is an onsite role at 200 W Baltimore St. Baltimore, MD 21201, there may be some flexibility for hybrid work once the identified candidate is onboarded at the supervisor s discretion.

Senior Database Administrator/Systems Engineer to support critical data center operations. This role is essential to maintaining our enterprise-grade infrastructure, which includes comprehensive Oracle, PostgreSQL, IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server database administration across Production, Development, and Test environments. The successful candidate will manage our complex virtualized environment consisting of 300+ VMware virtual servers and physical rack-mounted systems, integrated with NetApp All Flash array and legacy EMC SAN storage solutions and will be a key participant in their migration and refactoring in the AWS cloud. Key responsibilities encompass advanced IBM Cognos Business Intelligence administration, web services management, and enterprise backup operations using Commvault Complete Data Protection platform and AWS Backup utilities to perform for nightly server and database backups. This position requires expertise in maintaining high availability, multi-tier database environments while ensuring optimal performance, security, and disaster recovery capabilities across all systems supporting the Maryland State Department of Education's educational data infrastructure. This role demands a technical professional capable of managing complex enterprise systems in a mission-critical environment where uptime and data integrity are paramount to supporting educational services across the state.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ORACLE DATABASE ADMINISTRATION

Core Functions:

• Database installation, configuration, and version upgrades
• Comprehensive tablespace and storage management
• Database reorganization through export/import utilities
• Schema management including tables, indexes, and partitions
• Performance tuning including Oracle memory optimization
• Rollback segment and extent management
• Database backup, recovery, and restoration operations
• Production-to-test database refreshes
• Oracle CPU patching and RAC administration
• Coordination with Oracle support for production hotfixes

Oracle Application Server & Portal Support:

• Oracle 12c Application Server Portal administration
• Regular database maintenance and logical backups
• SQL*Loader operations for payroll file processing
• TAR management and Oracle consultant coordination

MICROSOFT SQL SERVER ADMINISTRATION

Core Functions:

• SQL Server installation, migration, and platform upgrades
• Database and user account creation and administration
• Test environment provisioning for vendors and users
• Backup monitoring, recovery, and restoration operations
• Transaction log and data file growth monitoring
• SQL Server Reporting Services administration
• Database security management and consistency checks
• Application vendor coordination and user issue resolution

BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE & REPORTING

IBM Cognos Environment:

• Cognos Impromptu
• Cognos Impromptu Web Reports
• Cognos ReportNet

Administration Tasks:

• Cognos catalog administration and user account management
• Report creation, modification, and republishing.
• Impromptu Web Reports troubleshooting and maintenance.
• Directory Server administration and Access Manager integration
• Distribution Shuttle Builder management

DATA INTEGRATION & ETL PROCESSES

• Weekly file transfer coordination with Maryland State Comptroller's Office
• Financial Data Warehouse refresh verification and monitoring
• Informatica PowerCenter & Designer troubleshooting (version 9.5)
• Data transformation process management and error resolution
• Annapolis Data Center (ADC) coordination for file transfer issues
• Warrant data distribution to remote MSDE sites (WTC and DDS)

AWS Environment:

• Provisioning following DoIT best practices
• Migration from VMware Environment to EC2 instances
• Refactoring from EC2 instances to AWS RDS

Hardware & Network Support:

• Cisco UCS chassis and blade server coordination
• Support for Oracle RAC
• Basic network administration and Windows server management
• Server consolidation projects

Backup & Recovery:

• CommVault Galaxy Simpana version 11 administration
• Daily server, database, and VM image backup coordination
• Client configuration troubleshooting
• Database backup and restore operations
• DoIT CommVault backup team coordination

WEB SERVICES & APPLICATION SUPPORT

• Microsoft IIS Web Server 6.0/7.0 administration
• Production website setup and maintenance
• iPlanet Directory Server (LDAP) management
• Application troubleshooting and user support
• DocuShare upgrade management
• Oracle WebLogic support

Education and Years of Experience: Must possess a bachelor s degree (master s degree preferred).

Have at least five (5) years of practical experience as a senior DBA resource, including certifications as an Oracle and Microsoft SQL Database Administrator.

Preferred Skills: The ideal candidate shall demonstrate the capability to independently furnish all necessary technical services required to successfully complete complex database administration tasks and produce high-quality deliverables across multiple enterprise systems. Candidates should possess comprehensive in-house expertise in Oracle and SQL Server database administration, VMware virtualization, storage management, business intelligence platforms, and data center operations, or demonstrate established professional relationships and strategic partnerships with specialized technical resources to ensure seamless service delivery and support for all assigned responsibilities.
