PROTECTION & CONTROLS ENGINEER

Designs the substation systems and relay settings used in the control and operation of utility transmission and distribution facilities. Analyzes the performance of protective relay operations to ensure reliability and proper coordination of the overall electric system. Provides guidance, oversight and direction for technical services personnel for substation maintenance and installation activities. Creates equipment specifications and standards for substation protection, automation, and communications equipment and oversee the operation of these systems.

Conducts engineering and operational studies and provides recommendations in order to provide safe, reliable, and economical substation plans and designs according to established cooperative guidelines. Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques and procedures while using judgment when making adaptations and modifications.

SUBSTATION ENGINEER

Applies diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to a broad variety of assignments and related fields to meet requirements. Prepares engineering, design, and construction of new and upgraded substations to provide reliable and economical system design and operation following established NOVEC guidelines. Provides consulting services to System Engineering & Planning Department concerning substation capacity issues. Provides substation cost estimates and complete turnkey services for Cooperative long and short-range plans.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

ENGINEER III: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution is required. A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred. 5+ years of related experience is required. Experience and/or training in the design, construction, and operation of electrical substations is preferred. NCEES EIT certification is required.

ENGINEER IV: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution is required. A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred. 9+ years of related experience is required. Experience and/or training in the design, construction, and operation of electrical substations is preferred. NCEES EIT certification is required. A licensed Professional Engineer preferred.
