Job Title : E-Commerce Domain SME

We are looking for an E-Commerce Domain Subject Matter Expert (SME) to work directly with a Retail client to drive functional clarity, solution alignment, and domain excellence across multiple buyer-facing and retail operations journeys.
This role requires deep understanding of e-commerce processes, strong experience in large-scale retail implementations, and the ability to bridge business requirements with technical teams. You are not expected to write code, but must be able to guide engineering teams in designing the right functional flows and validating solutions.
The person needs to be able to travel to US within a weeks notice for client meeting where needed if residing in India
Key Responsibilities
Functional Domain Leadership
- Act as the primary functional SME for e-commerce initiatives including catalog, search, product discovery, cart, checkout, payments, membership, and order management.
- Analyze business requirements and translate them into clear, structured functional specifications.
Solutioning and Implementation
- Own functional design for enhancements, new features, user journeys, and cross-system integrations.
- Conduct functional walkthroughs with engineering teams and validate solution feasibility.
- Evaluate impact across upstream/downstream systems (OMS, payment gateways, fulfillment, inventory, membership, etc.).
- Work with technical teams to build solutions for Business pain areas. Ability to bring the broader perspective of the industry in convincing clients about the solution.
- Should bring knowledge of implementation of e-commerce (preferably custom stack) across retail clients
Retail & E-Commerce Expertise
- Advise stakeholders on industry best practices, buyer experience optimization, omni-channel patterns, and retail operations.
- Bring expertise on cart behavior, promotion logic, inventory visibility, shipping methods, payments & refunds, fulfillment flows, and order lifecycle.
- Benchmark client s workflows with leading global retailers (Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc.) to suggest improvements.
Required Skills & Experience
- 15 plus years of experience in e-commerce / retail domain with at least 8+ years as a functional SME.
- Deep understanding of:
- Product catalog & taxonomy
- Search & product discovery flows
- Pricing, promotions, and membership-driven entitlements
- Cart, checkout, and payment workflows
- Inventory visibility, delivery/fulfillment, buy-online models
- Order lifecycle (OMS) and post-purchase operations
- Experience in large-scale e-commerce implementations (Costco, Walmart, Target, Kroger, Amazon, or similar is preferred).
- Ability to write clear, structured BRDs, FRDs, process flows, functional specs, and acceptance criteria.
- Write and build solution proposals for the client
- Strong analytical skills and ability to deep-dive into complex business scenarios.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills able to present to business and engineering leadership.
