Job Summary

University of Utah Health is looking for our next strategic, design-forward Experience Designer to join our Digital Experience team. You will help shape user-centered digital experiences across all our clinical, academic, and research websites to help our patients, providers, researchers, and students easily find information, understand our value, and make it easy for them to take action.

You'll combine hands-on UI design with user research, journey mapping, and rapid prototyping within our large-scale content management environment. You'll work closely with our team of content strategists, designers, developers, and other marketing partners to deliver accessible, intuitive, and high-performing digital experiences.

Your primary focus will be optimizing patient access by streamlining how patients search for providers, schedule appointments, and find care.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities
  • Design and refine content-rich, user-centered experiences across clinical, academic, and research web properties.
  • Support a major website redesign initiative by improving page-level experience and UI patterns.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our enterprise design system.
  • Translate user research, analytics, and stakeholder input into actionable design deliverables that include wireframes, journey maps, prototypes, and high-fidelity comps.
  • Map and improve digital funnels for accessing care, such as provider search, appointment scheduling, and information about our services.
  • Identify points of friction in the patient journey using analytics, feedback, and heuristic evaluation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement design systems and scalable solutions across a growing web ecosystem.
  • Participate or lead usability testing, heuristic evaluations, and accessibility audits.
  • Plan and conduct user and site research and synthesize findings into personas, journey maps, and reports
  • Balance user needs, business priorities, and technical feasibility in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Work quickly and experiment often to rapidly test and iterate on your work, using qualitative feedback and performance metrics to guide improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

  • 3-5 years of UX/UI experience (healthcare, higher ed, or regulated industry preferred).
  • 2-4 years of experience designing for large, content-driven websites with robust design systems.
  • Demonstrated experience designing for conversion-oriented flows in healthcare, e-commerce, or other service-based digital environments.
  • Proficiency in modern design/prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch).
  • Strong understanding of UX best practices, user testing, building surveys, user research, interaction design, responsive design, usability testing, and accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1+).
  • Experience with enterprise CMS platforms such as Drupal (preferred), WordPress multisite, or Sitecore.
  • Clear understanding of patient or customer journeys and the constraints of regulated industries.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing your understanding of UX process and featuring polished, multi-audience design work.
  • Skilled collaborator across multi-discipline teams.
  • Curious, data-driven thinker who is always learning and stays current with emerging tools and trends.

Preferences
  • 3+ years experience with large-scale UX/UI related responsibilities.
  • 3+ years experience using modern design/prototyping tools like Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, and Miro.
  • Experience in healthcare, academic medicine, or higher education environments.
  • Knowledge of A/B testing and personalization strategies.
