Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering

Experience
  • A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in engineering with emphasis on the practice of civil and structural engineering

Summary

The Senior Civil and Structural Engineer reviews, evaluates, performs and coordinates designs, drawings and specifications for conformance to civil and/or structural engineering requirements. The incumbent recommends approval/denial of construction documents covering all Civil and/or Structural systems for Metrorail and Metrobus facilities.

Job Duties
  • Reviews civil and structural design, drawings, specifications and technical reports for projects under design and evaluates overall constructability and maintainability. Performs in-house design projects and prepares and reviews structural design modifications for existing rail and bus facilities as required.
  • Coordinates and reviews contractor submitted shop and working drawings, design calculations and computations, catalog cuts, and samples related to temporary structures, bridges, deckings, pavements, earth and rock support systems, tunnels, underpinning, various structural members, facility structural designs, layouts and alignment.
  • Makes determinations as to conformance with codes and other established standards, guidelines and necessary coordination with affected other engineering disciplines.
  • Serves as project engineer or coordinator of interdisciplinary engineering to deal with special engineering or construction problems and develops remedial solutions during operation and maintenance of existing rail and bus facilities.
  • Prepares or reviews feasibility studies, special reports, and investigations pertaining to civil and structural systems and subsystems, related user needs, and requirements. Prepares cost estimates as required.
  • Frequently visits rough construction sites and other typical construction work environment such as tunnels, deep shafts and cofferdams. Occasionally crouches in confined spaces or climbs ladders and scaffoldings to personally inspect problem areas. Wears hard hat and other safety protective equipment or clothing as mandated or necessary.

Other Duties
  • Participates as required, in Substantial Completion Inspections, and other field site inspections or investigations related to Differing Site Conditions and other construction problems.
  • Stays abreast of state-of-the-art developments in the civil and structural engineering fields and applies those techniques and procedures to benefit the Authority's construction program, maintenance and reconstruction work
  • Conducts rigorous shop drawing reviews which include: details and calculations pertaining to stresses and forces in pre-stressed concrete structures; size, details and layout of structural/miscellaneous steel and reinforced concrete members and facilities; adequacy of materials, connections, welding certifications, test procedures and results, and catalog cuts
  • Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.
