Compensation Overview
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
Join the Enterprise AI and Emerging Technology organization at Travelers! This is an opportunity to be part of a dynamic team of engineers passionate about applying artificial intelligence to change the insurance industry.

Travelers is seeking a talented Software Engineer II to join our innovative team as we transform our Technology landscape. The ideal candidate will bring expert-level Python programming expertise, complemented by React UI development experience. Strong SQL proficiency is essential, with PostgreSQL experience highly valued. We're looking for someone with familiarity of Kubernetes concepts and hands-on experience with public cloud platforms, particularly AWS or Azure. Experience with generative AI technologies is a plus. In this role, you'll tackle end-to-end engineering challenges across our systems - from development and configuration to testing, troubleshooting, and implementation based on sophisticated user and system design specifications. You'll also play a key role in our incident response process, conducting thorough impact analyses and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
What Will You Do?
  • Design and implement solutions for technical requirements of intermediate complexity, showcasing your analytical and development expertise
  • Collaborate with our agile team to analyze, assess, and resolve complex defects and incidents, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills
  • Work autonomously within team guidelines to tackle well-defined challenges while contributing to our collaborative environment
  • Proactively expand your technical knowledge and capabilities through continuous learning opportunities
  • Contribute to our innovation initiatives and technology advancement efforts

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Expert-level proficiency in Python programming, including experience with modern frameworks and best practices
  • Strong React UI development skills for creating intuitive and responsive user interfaces
  • Comprehensive SQL knowledge with hands-on PostgreSQL experience preferred
  • Understanding of Kubernetes concepts (nice-to-have)
  • Practical experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS or Azure services and architecture
  • Experience with generative AI technologies, including:
    • Working knowledge of transformer-based models like GPT
    • Experience implementing LLM applications using frameworks such as LangChain or AutoGen
    • Understanding of prompt engineering techniques and best practices
    • Familiarity with vector databases for semantic search applications
    • Knowledge of responsible AI principles and implementing appropriate guardrails
    • Ability to integrate AI capabilities into production applications
    • Experience with RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) architectures
    • Knowledge of optimization techniques for cost-effective AI implementation
  • Four years of programming/development experience preferred.
  • Delivery - Intermediate delivery skills including the ability to estimate accurate timelines for tasks and deliver work at a steady, predictable pace to achieve commitments, contribute to the software design strategy and methodologies used to best meet the system requirements, consider and build for many different use cases, avoid over engineering, and ensure automation, deliver complete solutions but release them in small batches, and identify important tradeoffs and negotiate them.
  • Domain Expertise - Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including understanding technical concepts necessary to do the job effectively and aware of industry trends, demonstrate willingness, cooperation, and concern for business issues and priorities, and possess in depth knowledge of immediate systems worked on and some knowledge of adjacent systems.
  • Problem Solving - Strong problem solver who ensures solutions are built for the long term, is able to resolve new issues, recognizes mistakes using them as learning and teaching opportunities and consistently breaks down large problems into smaller, more manageable ones.
  • Communication - Strong communicator who possesses the ability to articulate information clearly and concisely with the business, document work in a clear, easy to follow manner, collaborate well with team members as both a mentor and mentee, take in vague requirements and ask the right questions to ensure clarification, offer feedback appropriately and effectively, seek out and receives constructive criticism well, listen when others are speaking and make space for colleagues to share their thoughts.
  • Leadership - Intermediate leadership skills with the ability to help create a safe environment for others to learn and grow as engineers and a proven track record of self-motivation in identifying opportunities and tracking team efforts.


What is a Must Have?
  • Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in work experience.
  • Two years of programming/development experience.
