Description
Robert Half is seeking a Database Designer for a fulltime remote role with a Medical software company.
Must be based in Austin, TX, metropolitan area.
The Database Designer will be responsible for creating and implementing sound database schema and data models that support our SaaS platform's scalability, performance, and maintainability. This role will refactor our existing fragmented and non-normalized databases into a cohesive, well-structured model, while guiding developers to adopt best practices moving forward.
While the primary focus will be schema and data model design in SQL Server, experience with ETL, reporting, and data warehouse design is a plus. The ideal candidate can also provide occasional DBA coverage during absences, ensuring operational continuity.
Duties and Responsibilities
-Analyze current database structures to identify and resolve design flaws, redundancies, and normalization issues.
-Redesign and refactor schemas to align with best practices for scalability, maintainability, and performance.
-Consolidate multiple databases into logical schemas where appropriate.
-Collaborate closely with developers to ensure application features align with the data model.
-Define and enforce database design standards, naming conventions, and documentation practices.
-Work with the DBA to ensure designs are operationally sound, secure, and maintainable.
-Assist in ETL process design, reporting architecture, and data warehouse modeling (as needed).
-Provide coverage for the DBA during planned absences, including monitoring, maintenance, and basic administrative tasks.
-Document all schemas, relationships, and design decisions in a maintainable format (e.g., data dictionaries, ER diagrams).
Other duties as needed
Requirements
Interviews are currently being conducted, for immediate consideration please apply.
The successful Database Designer will have:
-5+ years of experience in database design, data modeling, or equivalent role.
Strong proficiency in SQL Server (schema design, indexing strategies, constraints, T-SQL queries).
-Proven experience normalizing databases and consolidating schemas in production environments.
-Familiarity with data modeling tools (ER/Studio, ERwin, SQL Server Data Tools, etc.).
-Strong understanding of relational database theory and best practices for OLTP environments.
-Ability to collaborate with developers to translate business requirements into efficient data structures.
Preferred Qualifications
-Experience with ETL tools, reporting platforms (e.g., SSRS, Power BI), or data warehouse design.
-Understanding of database performance tuning and query optimization.
-Familiarity with SaaS environments and multi-tenant database design considerations.
-Experience with SQL Server administration tasks (backup/restore, indexing, performance monitoring).
