Job Details

Battelle delivers when others can't. We conduct research and development, manage national laboratories, design and manufacture products and deliver critical services for our clients-whether they are a multi-national corporation, a small start-up or a government agency.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

Job Summary

You will be a core team member in the design and development of medical and commercial products and systems. This role contributes to all phases of product design including initial requirements definition, concept generation, feasibility assessment/demonstration, detailed design including engineering analysis and testing, verification testing and all of the documentation and rigor that comes with developing regulated medical technology.

Projects typically involve multidisciplinary teams so you will regularly interface with electrical, software, systems, human factors, materials scientists, and other engineers as needed for the project. You will work closely with the program manager as both an individual contributor and/or a technical lead responsible for guiding other engineers also depending on the needs of the project.

This particular role is for experienced engineers who have been part of product development for the early part of their careers but are seeking a new challenge, new environment, or both to build their experience and accelerate their career.

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical solutions that represent components, subsystems, and/or products
  • Participate in shaping the product design through upfront concept generation, as well as defining functional needs, system requirements and testing/measurement methods
  • Apply creative thought and state-of-the-art technology to solve technical design problems throughout the entire development process
  • Work with technicians and/or hands-on assembly and testing work in the lab to demonstrate feasibility or refine the design solution
  • Work with program managers to complete and/or lead tasks within budget and schedule
  • Communicate results and progress using written and oral communication to project leadership and the customer
  • Generate design, development and support documentation following QS/ISO processes and procedures
  • Work with management and Team Leads to participate in (and potentially lead) developmental activities for less experienced team members.

Key Qualifications

  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills (verbal, written, and visual)
  • Creative problem solving and analytical skills
  • Experienced working in diverse teams and incorporating others' perspectives into shared ideas and concepts
  • Ability to conduct technical activities with minimal direction and or assume task leadership responsibilities
  • Self-starter and continual learner
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university and 8+ years working experience in product development, solution design, or engineering consultancies or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and 6+ years of working experience in product development, solution design, or engineering consultancies
  • Design engineering experience with medical technology or simulated regulated technology requiring traceability of the design over time
  • Design for manufacturing experience e.g. machined parts, sheet metal, packaging of electronics/cables, etc. for products
  • Fluent using CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks)
  • Project or technical task leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the design and development of medical devices, diagnostic instrumentation, or drug delivery devices is highly preferred
  • Hands on general lab skills including the building and testing of prototypes
  • Literate in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Experience using FEA analysis tools with a strong preference for ANSYS and/or Abaqus and plastic part experience
  • Understanding of the FDA Quality System Regulation (QSR) and involvement in an ISO13485 operational environment
