Job Description

MidAmerican Energy Company is seeking students pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in data analytics, computer science, management information systems, mathematics, or related field of study, graduating later than August 2026. Data Science Interns will gain understanding of key drivers of business and engage with analytics framework/tools to create value from data. The position is temporary, nonexempt, and full-time/hourly through the summer.

Interns will have the opportunity to participate in the annual three-day summer intern event in Des Moines, Iowa where they will tour state-of-the-art facilities, network with leadership, and gain a broader understanding of MidAmerican Energy Company. Other panels, lunch and learns, and events will be happening throughout the summer to give our interns the best experience.

Responsibilities

Overview
The BHE Asset Management team collaborates with all Berkshire Hathaway Energy affiliates to identify and develop actionable data analytics that support operational goals. This internship offers hands-on experience with data interpretation and analysis related to thermal generation and compression systems. Interns will work with various databases and tools, including Power BI and Databricks, to help meet business objectives.

As an Operations Analytics Intern, you will assist staff in evaluating operational data and providing feedback on reliability improvement initiatives. You'll gain exposure to root cause analysis, data visualization, and process improvement techniques. This role is designed to help you apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges in the energy industry.

This position requires problem-solving and analytical skills for investigating root causes using analytics tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support analysis and development of asset maintenance projects to improve reliability and customer service.
  • Assist in creating asset performance improvement and investment optimization plans.
  • Conduct probability and consequence-of-failure analysis.
  • Help develop process documentation in collaboration with multiple utilities.
  • Provide input on integrating new ideas into existing processes.
  • Explore and propose methods for improving operational results.
  • Use Power BI for visualization and Databricks for data engineering tasks.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in data analytics, engineering, or a related field.
  • Must be available January-May up to 20hrs a week.
  • Must be available May 2026 - August 2026 40hrs a week.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Power BI) and data platforms (Databricks) is a plus.
