ROLE SUMMARY

The Azure Platform Engineer to design, implement, and maintain cloud infrastructure and automation solutions. The ideal candidate will have expertise in infrastructure and configuration automation, container management and orchestration, API management, and site reliability engineering (SRE). You will work closely with DevOps, software engineering, and security teams to build scalable, resilient, and high-performing cloud environments. They have a passion for quality delivery of solutions that can scale and support business needs.

USG offers a hybrid workplace. The office location is Chicago, IL.

DEFINITION OF THE TEAM

The Cloud Operations team is part of the IT Operations team at USG. It is made up of a cross-functional team responsible for USG's Cloud Infrastructure, Automation Patterns, and Integration Platforms. They actively refine and improve on the platform to ensure the system is operational, secure, and cost-effective. The team leverages cutting-edge technologies and best practices to optimize the cloud environment, ensuring it meets the dynamic needs of the business while maintaining stringent security protocols and cost-efficiency.

The team supports a wide array of business initiatives, providing the necessary infrastructure and automation to facilitate seamless operations and innovation. They work closely with their development and security counterparts to ensure the platform meets business needs, aligning technological capabilities with strategic goals. The team members are self-starters who are driven by their passion for technology, constantly seeking out new ways to enhance performance and reliability. Their collaborative approach and commitment to excellence enable USG to maintain a robust and agile cloud environment, capable of supporting the company's growth and innovation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Infrastructure & Configuration Automation:
  • Design and implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Bicep, Terraform, or ARM templates.
  • Automate cloud deployments, configuration management, and compliance using PowerShell, Azure CLI, or Ansible.
  • Optimize cloud resources for cost, security, and performance.

Container Management & Orchestration:
  • Deploy, manage, and optimize workloads on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
  • Implement best practices for containerization (Docker) and microservices architecture.
  • Configure and monitor Kubernetes networking, security, and scaling strategies.

API Management & Integration:
  • Design and maintain API gateways using Azure API Management (APIM).
  • Secure and optimize APIs with rate limiting, authentication, and logging.
  • Automate API deployments using CI/CD pipelines.

Site Reliability Engineering (SRE):
  • Develop observability solutions with Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and Log Analytics.
  • Implement incident management and automated recovery mechanisms.

Optimize system reliability and performance through chaos engineering and performance tuning.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development, or a related field preferred or relevant job history.

Required Skills
  • 3-5+ years of experience in Azure cloud engineering.
  • Proficiency in Terraform, Bicep, or ARM for infrastructure automation.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes (AKS) and Docker.
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps).
  • Experience with APIM, API security, and monitoring.
  • Familiarity with SRE and DevSecOps principles, incident management, and monitoring tools.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell, Python, or Bash scripting.

Preferred Skills
  • Azure certifications (AZ-104, AZ-400, or AZ-305).
  • Experience with Kafka a plus
  • Knowledge of security best practices (RBAC, Key Vault, Defender for Cloud).

Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
