Overview
.The architect will collaborate with business architecture, data architecture, and enterprise architecture teams, as well as data stewards and custodians, to design, implement, and mature VDOT's enterprise data environment. This includes enhancing data quality, defining taxonomies, strengthening metadata management, and contributing to enterprise data models, capability models, data flows, and strategic roadmaps.
The role also involves developing familiarity with standards such as the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) and the Spatial Data Standards for Facilities, Infrastructure, and Environment (SDSFIE).
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement effective data management processes leveraging expertise in data modeling and data quality.
  • Define and use taxonomies to improve data organization, classification, retrieval, and metadata consistency.
  • Apply or develop familiarity with NIEM, SDSFIE, and related data standards.
  • Strengthen enterprise data governance by improving data quality standards, monitoring practices, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Document data management processes, models, and architectural decisions clearly and thoroughly.
  • Support oversight of the full data lifecycle within a complex organizational environment.
  • Communicate data strategies, standards, and recommendations effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Required: Prior Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) experience directly relevant to this role.
  • Extensive experience in data quality management, including establishing standards, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience with enterprise data programs at large organizations (public or private).
  • Strong background in data modeling (conceptual, logical, physical).
  • Ability to bridge business architecture with NIEM standards.
  • Strong understanding of data governance principles and enterprise data best practices.
  • Proficiency in metadata management, taxonomy development, and data classification practices.
  • Experience managing the complete data lifecycle in complex organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
