Job Details

Job title: Backend Automation Engineer Location: Hybrid onsite in Minneapolis, MN (preferred) OR Denver, CO OR Milwaukee, WI Duration: 12-month contract +
If a candidate doesn t have direct IBM HATS experience, here are the skills and background areas that indicate they can ramp up quickly:

Core Technical Foundations

  • Mainframe Interaction Knowledge
Familiarity with 3270/5250 terminal emulators, TN3270/TN5250 protocols, or similar legacy systems.
  • Java/J2EE Development
HATS customization relies heavily on Java, so strong Java coding and integration experience is critical.
  • Web Technologies
HTML, CSS, JSP, and servlets since HATS transforms green screens into web interfaces.

Integration & Middleware

  • API Development and Testing
Experience with SOAP/REST services, as HATS often exposes mainframe functions via APIs.
  • Enterprise Integration Patterns
Working knowledge of MQ, ESB, or similar middleware for connecting mainframe to distributed systems.

Legacy System Familiarity

  • COBOL or RPG exposure (not mandatory, but helpful for understanding mainframe workflows).
  • Batch processing and job scheduling experience (e.g., JCL).

Ideal Candidate Profile
If they lack HATS but have:

  • Java + API + Mainframe emulator experience
