Expert Level: Senior Software Engineer

Location: Remote (within the contiguous U.S.)
Travel: Up to 20% (quarterly trips to Fort Worth, TX - expenses covered)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our technology transformation initiative at BNSF Railway. This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge platforms and products that power one of the largest freight rail networks in North America. You will design and build scalable, reliable systems that enable efficient rail logistics and drive innovation across our enterprise.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop distributed systems, APIs, and platform services.
  • Build high-performance, scalable software for rail network operations.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines, automation tools, and DevOps best practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Own architecture decisions for large-scale systems and mentor other engineers.
  • Develop monitoring and alerting systems using Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry.
  • Work with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and serverless technologies.
  • Ensure secure coding practices and platform reliability.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 6+ years of software development experience.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one language (Java, Python, Go, C#, etc.).
  • 5+ years experience with full software development life cycle.
  • Expertise in distributed systems and technologies:
    • Messaging frameworks (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
    • API gateways
    • SQL/NoSQL/Graph databases
    • Caching systems
    • Serverless platforms
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and DevOps practices.
  • Familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; experience as a mentor or tech lead.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Knowledge of frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot.
  • Experience operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
  • Interest in sustainable infrastructure and cost optimization.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Worth, TX.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $100.00 - $200.00/hr.
