What You Will Do

The Science/Engineering Project Leader manages scientific or engineering scope and ensures the timely completion of specific scientific or engineering projects; establishes requirements for the project; defines and/or executes project deliverables, budgets, and schedules; oversees the project team in the planning, tracking, and execution of the project from initiation to completion. Projects are a set of related activities needed to produce specific products or services to meet customers' requirements. Project Leaders develop work packages that define what will be accomplished to meet specific programmatic needs and produce the work products defined by the work packages. Projects are finite, with a definite beginning, middle, and end. The customer may be an external body, such as a federal agency, or may be an internal organization within the Laboratory. Projects are typically a subset of, and funded by, a Laboratory program, but (rarely) may be stand-alone and separately funded.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Applies knowledge and experience in developing scientific or engineering project plans and detailed work breakdown structures, negotiating work packages, and assigning various aspects of work to complete project deliverables.
  • Negotiates with program and line managers to ensure that resources are available to accomplish the work, to identify procurement and contracting needs, and to marshal resources to complete project deliverables within the scope, schedules, and budgets defined in project work packages.
  • Monitors performance and manages, under change control, the project scope, schedule, budget, and baselines.
  • Integrates moderately complex project work with other Laboratory priorities and commitments, including safety, security, environmental compliance, quality, contractor assurance, and business imperatives.
  • Identifies potential project risks, developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommending risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of the project(s).
  • Oversees mid-sized project team(s) in the planning, tracking, and execution of project plans from initiation to completion.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a science or engineering related field, from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.

At this level an advanced degree is typically expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the requirements included in the Defense Programs Business Process System to perform Defense Programs nuclear weapons work scopes and / or the Phase 6.X process.
  • Demonstrated quality assurance and / or quality control knowledge based on requirements from LANL, Department of Energy, or other relevant quality systems.
  • Experience working in a high-hazard nuclear or explosives facilities.
  • Experience utilizing the Earned Value Management System to report on project performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to programmatic work, or to typical manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with quality assurance requirements including but not limited to NAP-24A or NQA-1.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires ship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
