Sr. Network Planning Engineer

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Planning Engineer with strong expertise in IP and Ethernet network architecture, planning, and optimization for large-scale service provider environments. The ideal candidate will have Layer 3 and Layer 2 networking expertise, be proficient in routing, switching, and VPN technologies, and have hands-on experience with Cisco, Juniper, and/or Nokia router and switch platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and optimize IP/MPLS networks to meet performance, scalability, and reliability targets.
  • Design and implement Layer 3 (IP) and Layer 2 (Ethernet) solutions for core, aggregation, and access networks.
  • Configure and optimize TCP/IP, IS-IS, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VPLS, QoS, L2VPN, L3VPN, multicast, and IPv4/IPv6.
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and vendor teams to support network expansion, upgrades, and migrations.
  • Provide high-level troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex network issues.
  • Develop and maintain network diagrams, configuration standards, and design documentation.
  • Ensure network compliance with operational, security, and industry best practices.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Service Provider / Telecom experience (CenturyLink, Lumen, or similar preferred).
  • Strong background in Layer 3 IP and Layer 2 Ethernet networking.
  • Protocol expertise: TCP/IP, IS-IS, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VPLS, QoS, L2VPN, L3VPN, multicast, IPv4/IPv6.
  • Vendor platforms: Cisco, Juniper, and/or Nokia routers and switches.
  • 7+ years of network engineering or planning experience in large-scale carrier networks.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for both routing and switching.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
