Role: Data Center Hardware Engineer

Location: Dayton, OH Onsite 5 days

Exception to be on rotational support and on call/weekends as required

Job Description:

The Data Center Engineer will be based at our Dayton, OH data center and will help provide global data center support services to our various data center infrastructure.

This role is responsible for the hands-on design, deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of all physical server, storage, and network hardware in our production data centers. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in enterprise server hardware, storage arrays, networking equipment, and data center best practices.

A minimum requirement is 3 years of experience in a practical environment.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Install, rack, stack, cable, and configure new servers, storage arrays, blade systems, and network equipment (switches, routers, PDUs, etc.).
  • Perform hardware-level diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of failed components (motherboards, CPUs, RAM, GPaccelerators, RAID controllers, HBAs, NICs, power supplies, fans, etc.).
  • Execute server and storage decommissions, data erasure, and asset disposal/recycling.
  • Manage and maintain accurate inventory of all hardware assets, spare parts, and consumables using ServiceNow tool and Excel spreadsheet.
  • Build and validate new server configs (BIOS/UEFI, RAID, iLO/iDRAC/IPMI, firmware updates).
  • Plan and execute hardware upgrades (CPU/memory expansions, storage migrations, GPU retrofits).
  • Conduct regular preventive maintenance, thermal/powder dust cleaning, and firmware patching cycles.
  • Respond to critical hardware incidents on a 24 7 on-call rotation.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation: rack elevation diagrams, cabling schedules, hardware disposal.
  • Ensure compliance with ESD safety standards, grounding, and data center physical security policies.
  • Work with vendors and OEM support for RMA processing and advanced replacements.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis (RCA) for major incidents and implement corrective actions.

Qualification and Expectations:

  • Experience supporting data centers with highly available infrastructure.
  • Experience working with vendors for data centers, hardware maintenance contracts, etc.
  • A good understanding of ServiceNow.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Customer-service oriented with good written/oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, making decisions based upon priorities, schedules, and an understanding of business initiatives.
  • Critical attention to detail, thoroughness and documentation.
