What We're Looking For:
As the Power BI Administrator/Developer on our team, you'll play a key role in shaping how our organization leverages data for decision-making. This position will own the administration of our Power BI environment, including managing user access, workspace structure, semantic model management and gateway configuration to ensure a secure, scalable, and high-performing BI platform.
Additionally, this position will collaborate with stakeholders to design and develop compelling dashboards and reports that transform complex data into meaningful insights. The Power BI Administrator will work with data analysts to apply principles of data storytelling and wireframing to craft intuitive, impactful visual experiences. You will thrive in this role if you have a technical background, creative mindset, and enjoy a fast-moving and collaborative atmosphere within in a modern cloud environment.

What You'll Do:
- Power BI Platform Administration: Manage and oversee the Power BI tenant and service settings, including administering workspaces, user access roles, and security configurations. This involves controlling who can access reports/datasets and structuring workspaces for teams or projects, in line with governance policies
- On-Premises Data Gateway Management: Configure and maintain on-premises data gateways in conjunction with the AWS group to ensure secure connectivity between cloud Power BI reports and on-prem or AWS-hosted data sources. This includes monitoring gateway performance, adding data sources, clustering for high availability, and applying updates or patches
- System Monitoring & Maintenance: Continuously monitor Power BI platform usage and performance, and perform regular maintenance (capacity planning, updates, and reboots) to keep the environment reliable and performant. This may involve tracking workspace usage, dataset refresh timings, and optimizing Premium capacity or cloud resources for efficiency
- Security & Compliance: Enforce data security and compliance standards within Power BI. Manage user permissions and ensure that data access meets organizational policies and industry regulations. Responsibilities include auditing activity (using Power BI logs) and maintaining compliance with data privacy laws
- Dashboard & Report Development: Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards, paginated reports, and data models according to best practices. This involves robust data modeling, writing DAX measures, and creating interactive visualizations that align with business requirements, style guide and core KPIs
- Stakeholder Collaboration & Support: Work closely with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into effective BI solutions. Provide user support and training as needed, helping business users understand the dashboards and self-service tools. This can include creating documentation, conducting demo sessions, and ensuring user adoption of Power BI across the organization
What You'll Need to Succeed:
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology/Systems or related technology studies (e.g. certifications)
- 5+ years of proven experience in BI administration, business intelligence, or a similar role
- Advanced proficiency with Power BI Desktop and Service, including strong skills in data modeling, Power Query (M), and DAX for complex calculations; Experience in developing rich dashboards and data visualizations, as well as knowledge of optimizing data models and report performance
- In-depth knowledge of Power BI administration features and best practices - from tenant settings and capacity management to content governance (workspace setup, deployment pipelines, usage monitoring); Ability to configure security (both at the data level and the workspace/app level) and to use admin tools or REST APIs for automating admin tasks
- Hands-on experience with the Power BI on-premises data gateway including experience in installing, configuring, and managing gateways to connect to on-prem databases or cloud VPCs.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms for AWS and Azure
- Ability to use scripting languages and APIs to automate tasks and streamline workflows; SQL proficiency including CTEs and DDL for validation and to create data assets supporting the data products
- Proficiency in PowerShell (or Python) for automating Power BI admin tasks, and experience using Power BI REST APIs or Power Platform (Power Automate) for deployments and integrations
- Strong analytical thinking coupled with a sense of design for data presentation; Creativity and the ability to turn data into impactful visuals and narratives
- Ability to be adept at choosing the right visualizations, designing intuitive layouts, and employing data storytelling techniques so that end users can easily interpret the insights
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to effectively communicate with peers, end users of all levels and engineers including collaboration on requirements, communicating technical constraints, training, documentation and requirements gathering
- Be comfortable managing upward, including being a proactive communicator and asking for help when needed
- Have confidence and be able to establish valuable relationships with others
- Must be able to prioritize key tasks and have a strong sense of ownership over your work
- Be active in seeking out ways to continuously improve yourself and gain new knowledge
Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:
- Experience deploying BI solutions in cloud environments and using cloud resources (for example, using Azure VNets or AWS VPCs for Power BI connectivity)
- Experience in the telecommunications or related industries (e.g. utilities)
- Familiarity with network setup (VPNs or virtual networks) to host gateways on cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure)
- PowerBI administration or development related certifications
- Experience with automation, CICD or similar in BI operations
- Experience with optimizing for large data volumes
- Analytical engineering exposure or experience including developing marts and pipelines with tools like DBT
We'll also need you to:
- Be able to work in the office at least 3 or more days a week to foster collaboration with the team and stakeholders
- Be able to travel occasionally, a few times a year
