Job Description:

General Support and Professional Conduct Carry out additional duties as needed Keep workspace orderly and tidy Offer technician support across different pharmacy functions when necessary Exhibit professionalism through timeliness, appearance, and courteous behavior Comply with all HIPAA standards Answer phones and engage customers with high-quality service Step into various roles based on staffing demands Provide coverage as a float technician when assigned Available to work during weekends, holidays, or on-call shifts per scheduling requirements Give constructive peer feedback during reviews Share important updates with care team members (e.g., scheduling, prior authorizations, backordered items, audits) Follow organizational policies and all relevant regulations and accreditation standards Take initiative and hold oneself and peers accountable for shift outcomes

Advanced Technician Roles Maintain certification for tech-verification responsibilities (if applicable by site) Lead or manage multiple departmental initiatives, such as:
  • Overseeing automated systems or tech-related workflows
  • Managing product recall processes
  • Serving as a trainer for technician competency programs
  • Acting as a certified N95 mask fit tester and scheduling annual assessments
  • Coordinating activities like quality assurance checks, expiration audits, sterile technique testing, and cleaning routines
  • Assisting with updates to training guides or standard operating procedures
  • Tracking call response trends and service benchmarks Resolve complex service issues efficiently Provide hands-on training to new hires or students and supply verbal/written feedback Serve as a preceptor and contribute to student evaluations Regularly collect patient medication histories and ensure proper documentation Participate in controlled substance monitoring and compliance procedures

Patient Interaction and Service Welcome customers as they arrive at the pharmacy Offer accurate estimates for prescription wait times Regularly check waiting areas to maintain timely service Notify patients of delays in medication delivery and explain the reason Direct patients to medication assistance programs when needed Answer calls professionally, following all standards Monitor and return voicemail messages promptly Properly categorize and label incoming faxed documents

Automation and Technology Oversight Operate pharmacy tech systems per guidelines Resolve technical discrepancies in a timely manner Communicate medication shortages to team members promptly Complete designated cycle counts and shelf-life checks on schedule Help maintain system hardware/software for optimal performance Inpatient responsibilities:
  • Refill and monitor stock levels in automated medication dispensing units
  • Use the controlled substance machine and maintain accurate logs

Supply and Inventory Management Restock areas using first-expired-first-out (FEFO) practices Follow PAR level targets when replenishing inventory Request needed items from buyers Receive, unpack, and organize deliveries Perform regular cycle counts and update expiration tracking Report inventory issues or order discrepancies quickly Take ownership of inventory for assigned area(s): generate orders, manage backstock, and organize restocking efforts Fulfill floor stock requests for clinical areas when applicable

Sterile Compounding Operations Prepare IV admixtures and other sterile products per USP and standards under pharmacist direction Remain current on annual aseptic technique validations, including glove fingertip and media fill tests Maintain sterility within the cleanroom environment by adhering to all procedural and documentation requirements Use automated compounding systems or barcode verification systems as part of workflow Use biological safety cabinets and observe all safety protocols when handling hazardous or chemotherapy drugs Keep required logs up to date in designated systems like PharmacyKeeper or QuickBase

Medication Preparation and Distribution Accurately fill and label medication prescriptions Deliver medications quickly to appropriate areas Use BSCs for preparation of hazardous or enteral medications when needed Return unused or unclaimed prescriptions and ensure proper crediting Operate automated dispensing and packaging tools (carousel, robots, Parata, Eyecon, Fillmaster) Complete documentation in systems like PharmacyKeeper or internal databases For inpatient settings:
  • Manage unit dose cart fills and exchanges
  • Prepare non-standard dosages by compounding medications when needed
