Data Scientist Transportation AI (Junior/Mid-Level)
Location: McLean, VA (On-site)
Type: Full-Time
We are seeking a Transportation Data Scientist to support research and development at the intersection of AI/ML, data science, and transportation systems. This role involves developing real-world AI solutions such as vehicle load classification, crash prediction, traffic safety analytics, and trustworthy AI.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct research on AI/ML methods, datasets, and transportation technologies.
Prepare, clean, integrate, and fuse multimodal transportation datasets (WIM, imagery, traffic logs, weather, permits).
Build and deploy AI/ML models for OS/OW vehicle classification, crash prediction, and synthetic data generation.
Evaluate model performance and recommend improvements for scalability and robustness.
Support stakeholder engagements with state DOTs, MPOs, enforcement agencies, and technical partners.
Assist with AI roadmaps, proposals, and ITS analytics initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor s in CS, Data Science, AI, Electrical/Transportation Engineering (Master s preferred).
2 5 years of experience in data science and machine learning.
Hands-on experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Pandas, NumPy.
Experience in deep learning, generative AI, computer vision, and ETL/multimodal data processing.
Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance (requires 3 years U.S. residency).
Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with state DOTs or federal transportation agencies.
Familiarity with transportation datasets: HSIS, SHRP2, NGSIM, SAE J2735.
Experience with synthetic data, LLMs, or physics-informed ML.
Knowledge of federal AI governance, risk management, and equity considerations.
Publications or presentations at AI/transportation conferences (e.g., TRB, ITS America).
