Position: Mainframe Consultant
Location: Plano, TX / Remote
Contract Length: 12 Months
Role Overview
The Mainframe Consultant will be responsible for advanced system programming tasks including configuration, installation, maintenance, and upgrades within a z/OS environment. This role supports enterprise mainframe operations and collaborates with multiple infrastructure and application teams to ensure stability, performance, and modernization efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Perform standard system programming activities including configuration, installation, and maintenance using SMP/E.
Complete Operating System upgrades and RSU maintenance using z/OSMF Workflow.
Architect, install, and configure complex z/OS environments and third-party software.
Support standardization efforts and introduction of new software features.
Collaborate with storage, performance, capacity planning, networking, and security teams to ensure seamless integration.
Work with Mainframe System Programmers to enhance environment reliability and maintainability.
Mentor team members, contribute to problem resolution, and support innovative improvements.
Identify and implement system/process improvements for z/OS environments.
Work closely with application support and internal business units to enable business initiatives.
Required Experience
12+ years hands-on experience as a Mainframe System Programmer working with z/OS and Independent Software Vendor (ISV) environments.
Mandatory Technical Skills
Expertise in SMP/E and non-SMP/E installation of ISV products.
Strong background in IBM and Broadcom software installation and upgrades.
Mastery of z/OS system commands, utilities, and automation tools.
Experience performing z/OS V2.5+ upgrades using z/OSMF workflow.
IODF/HCD experience for device configuration.
Familiarity with Sysplex configuration (preferred).
Proficiency in JCL, IBM utilities (IEBGENER, IEBCOPY, AMASPZAP, DFDSS).
Strong ISPF/TSO proficiency.
Working knowledge of REXX/CLIST.
Ability to design project plans (upgrades, maintenance, decommission) and communicate timelines clearly to stakeholders.
Ability to build strategy roadmaps to support long-term mainframe initiatives.
