Position Summary
Our client, a leading distributor of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, is seeking a Senior Systems Controls Engineer to join their engineering team in Portland, Oregon. This hybrid role will play a key part in bridging sales concepts to functional control systems across both industrial automation systems and mobile hydraulic platforms.

This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who thrives in a hands-on environment, someone who can design and program PLC-based systems, create hydraulic and electrical schematics, and help lead the technical execution of projects ranging from one-off custom builds to high-volume production.

The right candidate brings a rare blend of electrical control experience and hydraulic system expertise, especially in mobile equipment applications (e.g., oil & gas rigs, heavy trucks, or construction equipment). You ll collaborate closely with internal teams, vendors, and shop floor staff to bring complex, electromechanical solutions to life.
Responsibilities

  • Translate customer concepts, sketches, and sales notes into engineered electrical and hydraulic system designs
  • Select components, create electrical and hydraulic schematics, and produce complete fabrication drawings
  • Develop PLC and HMI programs for both industrial systems and mobile equipment (including Allen-Bradley, CoDeSys, Danfoss, and Siemens platforms)
  • Partner with shop personnel to support fabrication, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure quality and performance standards are met
  • Use CAD tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Inventor, and CoDeSys for design and documentation
  • Write and execute test procedures, verify system operation, and lead troubleshooting efforts on the shop floor
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing hands-on guidance in design, programming, and system validation
  • Maintain organized documentation, version control, and design records using Autodesk Vault and company standards

Minimum Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in systems controls engineering with a focus on both industrial automation and mobile hydraulics
  • Strong knowledge of fluid power systems, manifolds, control panels, and motion control
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., CoDeSys, ladder logic) and familiarity with multimeters, schematics, DC/AC circuits, and panel layout design
  • Hands-on experience with AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Vault, and Inventor
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to prioritize competing projects and drive execution under tight timelines
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills and comfortable working cross-functionally and on the shop floor
  • Bachelor s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering (or equivalent experience)

Additional Plus:

  • Experience with mobile hydraulic systems on oil & gas, utility, or construction vehicles
  • Background working in a custom manufacturing or OEM environment
  • Ability to support or mentor junior engineers or contractors

Salary / Wage Range
