Job Details

Role : VHF Radio System Technician

Location: Wausau , Green Bay, Black River Falls, Tomahawk. , WI-Can be flexible to accommodate right fit for selected candidate

100% Onsite.

Candidates must be current WI residents or willing to relocate prior to starting the role. Position location is not necessarily in Wausau. Can be flexible to accommodate right fit for selected candidate. Preferred office locations include Green Bay, Black River Falls, Tomahawk.

Duration of the Contract: until 6/30/26 with extensions possible

Top Required Skills (3-4) & Years of Experience:

o Knowledge of conventional VHF Radio System operability (2+ years)

o Technical competency with electronic equipment. (2+ years)

o Experience with vehicle and office electronics installation. (2+ years)

o Strong verbal and written communication skills. (2+ years)

o Ability to work alone or in a team environment. (2+ years)

Nice to Have Skills (2-3):

o Proficiency with radio test equipment (service monitors, antenna analyzers, etc.)

o Proficiency with radio programming

o Experience with cabling and network attached equipment

o Experience troubleshooting radio equipment.

Project details (project overview, who the contractor will work with, soft skills needed, etc.): This position will work closely with the DNR Radio Program staff. The staff consists of Radio Specialist, Radio System Administrator, Inventory Specialist, Tower Specialist, and Frequency Coordinator. This team works to provide radio support across the DNR supporting the State Forests, State Parks, Natural Heritage Conservation, Wildlife, and other Forestry programs. The Radio Program supports these divisions with radio support for fire suppression, prescribed burning, special events, administrative business, and public safety needs. This program coordinates with the WI State Patrol BNEDI technicians for some backbone maintenance needs. The DNR maintains three repeater systems Networked (statewide system primarily supporting wildfire needs), Brown (typically supports State Forest and State Park needs), and Golf (supports Wildfire operations). The DNR supports approximately 150 repeaters across 120 radio sites. The department maintains and supports approximately 2000 handheld and mobile radios.
