Job Details

A leading organization in the public interest technology space is seeking a Senior AI Architect to lead the design and implementation of AI solutions that improve access to justice and enhance legal service delivery. This role requires a visionary technologist who can architect secure, scalable AI systems, manage a small technical team, and collaborate across departments to develop impactful tools like chatbots, document automation platforms, and intelligent case management solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement AI/ML systems, including NLP solutions for client intake, legal research, translation, and document automation.
  • Develop custom AI applications such as legal chatbots, intelligent intake forms, and virtual assistants.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy standards, legal ethics, and responsible AI practices.
  • Evaluate and integrate third-party AI platforms and tools.
  • Build APIs and define integration strategies with existing legal tech infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive AI roadmap aligned with organizational mission and goals.
  • Create AI governance frameworks, including model monitoring and bias detection.
  • Collaborate with compliance and legal teams to ensure all AI solutions meet regulatory and ethical standards.
  • Produce technical documentation, training materials, and architecture diagrams.
  • Lead and mentor a small team of AI/IT engineers.
  • Work closely with legal, IT, and executive teams to identify opportunities for AI integration.
  • Manage external vendors and technology partners.

Candidate Requirements
  • Master's in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, or related field (or Bachelor's with 8+ years' experience).
  • 5+ years' experience building production-grade AI/ML systems.
  • 2+ years' leadership experience in a technical role.
  • Proficiency in Python and ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).
  • Expertise in NLP, large language models (LLMs), and generative AI.
  • Familiarity with cloud AI platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, OpenAI) and MLOps.
  • Strong foundation in AI ethics, bias mitigation, and privacy considerations.
  • Experience with system integration, APIs, and microservices architecture.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred
  • Background in legal tech, civic tech, or public interest technology.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and ethics regarding tech in legal practice.
  • Experience with document understanding, multilingual NLP (Spanish preferred), and privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA).
  • Exposure to knowledge graphs, semantic search, and accessibility standards.

Compensation: $150-180/hr
Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
