Job Title: Programmer Consultant
Location: Blythewood, SC (29016)
Contract Duration: 12 Months

Scope of the Project

The organization utilizes a multi-tier architecture for its core business systems. The business application tier is built using MicroFocus Visual COBOL running under IIS on Microsoft Windows Server 2022. This role will support the development of new functionality as well as the troubleshooting, modification, and enhancement of existing features within the current application framework.

Work may include development of business logic for online systems, batch processes, data extraction, and reporting across various business areas. The consultant will collaborate with UI tier teams working with Microsoft .NET (VB.NET, C#.NET) and database tier teams working with SQL Server and Oracle. Production troubleshooting is part of the role, so experience in production support is required.

The consultant is expected to work with minimal supervision, interact directly with business stakeholders, develop technical designs, code and test solutions, and provide ongoing support. Strong communication skills are essential.


Daily Duties / Responsibilities

  • Analyze Phoenix II, web service, and batch business applications

  • Take ownership of analyzing and troubleshooting assigned system issues

  • Develop and propose solutions

  • Code, test, and promote changes while coordinating with impacted users to ensure requirements are met

  • Provide daily and weekly status updates to the development manager


Required Skills (Ranked by Importance)

  • COBOL development using MicroFocus Visual COBOL with Visual Studio 2019/2022 on Windows Server 2022 under IIS

  • Experience with MicroFocus Visual COBOL v7, v9, or higher strongly preferred

  • Experience accessing Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server enterprise databases from COBOL applications

  • Ability to craft SQL statements to support system functionality


Preferred Skills (Ranked by Importance)

  • Visual Studio 2019 or newer debugging experience

  • IIS configuration and setup

  • Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS)

  • Microsoft C# .NET

  • Application programming against RDBMS (Oracle, SQL Server)

  • SQL development for Oracle databases


Required Education

  • Bachelor s degree in an information technology related field with 8+ years of experience,
    OR

  • Minimum 10 years of related experience


Certifications

  • Microsoft technical certifications considered an advantage

  • MicroFocus certifications are a significant plus
