Job Details

We are seeking an AWS / Web Application Engineer to support the National Park Service (NPS). This role blends hands-on AWS and application engineering. You ll manage AWS infrastructure, legacy ColdFusion/CommonSpot systems, modern JavaScript/TypeScript apps, and a robust .NET microservice ecosystem with heavy API usage.
Core Responsibilities

  • Administer and optimize AWS services: IAM, RDS (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Aurora), S3, ECS, EKS, SQS, SNS, Lambda, CloudFront, and CodeArtifact.
  • Support networking, load balancing, and perimeter devices (Sophos UTM).
  • Troubleshoot performance, policy, and permissions issues for development teams.
  • Act as the first line of AWS support for developer needs.

Application & CMS Management

  • Manage and maintain the CommonSpot CMS (ColdFusion-based), including templates, render handlers, custom elements, and third-party/API integrations.
  • Configure and tune ColdFusion servers, including JVM/JDK optimization, patching, and performance tuning.
  • Support IIS and Apache web servers (app pools, mod_rewrite, SSL certs, load balancing).
  • Configure and maintain the ImageResizer ISAPI plugin for IIS, heavily relied on across backend servers for dynamic image manipulation.

API Development & Integration

  • Design, implement, and maintain APIs (REST, SOAP, JSON, XML, GraphQL desirable).
  • Manage and publish APIs to data.gov; configure and support the API Umbrella platform.
  • Integrate and manage APIs with .NET microservices that power large-scale data flows.
  • Support data migrations and ETL/ELT pipelines (Extract-Transform-Load, Extract-Load-Transform).
  • Stay current on API security and industry trends.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent agents, with the ability to evaluate their potential impact on organizational strategy, operations, and service delivery.

Web Development & Modern Frameworks

  • Develop and integrate features using ColdFusion, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, XML.
  • Work with frameworks such as Bootstrap, React, and Angular (highly desirable).
  • Support modernization efforts bridging legacy systems with modern web stacks.

Database Administration

  • Manage SQL Server RDS (35+ databases): schema design, indexing, query tuning, stored procedures, views, and role-based security.
  • Support PostgreSQL and Aurora databases.
  • Perform and support data migrations, ETL/ELT processes, and performance optimization.

Leadership & Delivery

  • Navigate hybrid Agile/Waterfall delivery models.
  • Mentor and coach junior/mid-level developers.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to align technical solutions with business goals.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or related IT field (required).
  • PMP certification (desirable).
  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, SysOps, Developer) preferred.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development is essential.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of AWS engineering/administration.
  • ColdFusion expertise (installation, tuning, performance optimization).
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, XML.
  • Strong API development/management experience, including data.gov and API Umbrella.
  • Experience with .NET microservices and large-scale data systems.
  • SQL Server expertise (schema design, indexing, query tuning).
  • Experience with PostgreSQL/Aurora.
  • IIS, Apache, SSL, and load balancing experience.
  • Familiarity with ImageResizer ISAPI for IIS.
  • Proven team leadership in Agile/Waterfall environments.
  • Support proposal writing and technology innovation projects.
