The Role
We are seeking a Group Manager, AI Systems Engineering to join our Manufacturing Technology Development team within the General Motors Research and Development organization. In this role, you will manage a team working to integrate, test , and optimize AI robotic technologies. This includes aspects of data acquisition, compute resource management, model training, simulation , and curating digital assets.
You will direct infrastructure innovation, ensuring novel robotics and AI technologies scale securely, efficiently, and reliably into system-level prototypes. This role involves a combination of management skill s , artificial intelligence , and data engineering applied to real-world scenarios in dynamic manufacturing environments.

What You Will Do
- Lead and grow a multidisciplinary team of AI systems engineers focused on integrating, testing, and optimizing robotic AI technologies across hardware and software domains.
- Drive the development and deployment of scalable infrastructure for data acquisition, GPU-based training pipelines, simulation environments, and digital asset curation.
- Oversee system-level prototyping efforts, ensuring that novel AI and robotics technologies are securely and reliably integrated into real-world manufacturing environments.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with research scientists, software engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing experts to align AI systems engineering with broader automation goals.
- Establish and enforce best practices for data engineering, model training, and simulation workflows to ensure high performance, reproducibility, and robustness.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks related to AI system integration, including latency, scalability, and reliability in dynamic production settings.
- Develop talent of highly specialized team members to extend their competence beyond initial subject matter knowledge to learn from and support their team.
- Champion innovation and continuous improvement, fostering a culture of experimentation and learning within the team s and across A uto no m ous R obot C enter .
- Communicate technical strategy and progress to executive leadership, translating complex engineering challenges into actionable insights and roadmaps.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- 10+ years of professional experience. Exposure to leading high-performing engineering teams, ideally in AI systems, robotics, or embedded systems domains is preferred.
- Proven track record in developing and deploying AI/ML solutions for robotics, including system integration and real-world implementation.
- Strong technical background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or data engineering, with hands-on experience in system integration and deployment.
- Deep understanding of AI infrastructure, including data pipelines, GPU-based training, simulation environments, and digital asset management.
- Experience with real-time systems and deploying AI technologies in dynamic, real-world environments such as manufacturing, robotics, or autonomous systems.
- Track record of delivering complex, cross-functional projects, balancing innovation with operational excellence.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across disciplines and present technical concepts to executive stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving mindset, with the ability to anticipate technical challenges and guide teams through ambiguity.
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Advanced degree (PhD) in AI, Robotics, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field with a focus on systems integration or autonomous technologies.
- Experience in autonomous robotics, including simulation, perception , and real-time decision-making systems.
- Hands-on expertise with simulation platforms including Isaac Sim/Lab, MoveIt , interoperation with ROS for robotics and AI training and validation.
- Familiarity with edge computing and embedded AI, especially in constrained or latency-sensitive environments.
- Track record of innovation, including patents, publications, or contributions to open-source AI or robotics projects.
- Experience scaling AI systems prototype - to - production in industrial or manufacturing settings.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity and safety standards relevant to AI-enabled robotic systems.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor senior engineers, foster technical leadership, and build inclusive, high-impact teams .
