Job Summary

The Director of Software Engineering, Salesforce Marketing Cloud is a highly experienced leader responsible for casting the vision and setting the technical roadmap for Ascension's Salesforce Marketing Cloud platform. This role leads the engineering delivery, technical health, and best practices for Marketing Cloud, ensuring the platform is optimized to support personalized, scalable, and mission-driven digital engagement. The director will manage a team of leaders, engineers, and vendor partners, driving excellence in software delivery, platform stability, and technical innovation. This leader will serve as the technical owner of the platform, aligning Marketing Cloud capabilities with business priorities to deliver measurable outcomes.

Responsibilities

Technical Vision & Roadmap

  • Define and maintain the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for Salesforce Marketing Cloud, aligning with enterprise digital engagement strategies.
  • Collaborate with Product and Design teams to prioritize platform capabilities that enable personalized, omnichannel communication at scale.
  • Stay current on the Salesforce Marketing Cloud product roadmap, releases, and emerging capabilities to inform future state architecture and technology investments.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on Marketing Cloud platform architecture, including Journey Builder, Personalization, Data Cloud, Intelligence, and integrations with Salesforce and third-party systems.
Software Delivery & Platform Health

  • Lead the engineering delivery organization responsible for Marketing Cloud platform enhancements, integrations, and technical operations.
  • Ensure delivery teams are aligned to product priorities and accountable to key results (OKRs).
  • Establish and enforce best practices for platform configuration, custom development, and API integrations.
  • Oversee the technical health, performance, and security of the platform, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Leadership & People Development

  • Build and lead a team of engineering managers, engineers, and vendor partners to deliver high-quality software and platform services.
  • Mentor and coach leaders and engineers, creating opportunities for career growth and succession planning.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Manage vendor partnerships and contractors, ensuring alignment to technical standards and delivery expectations.
Operations & Budget Management

  • Own the CapEx and OpEx budgets for Marketing Cloud platform engineering, optimizing resources to deliver maximum value.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs for platform performance, delivery velocity, and operational health.
  • Ensure teams follow Ascension's processes, security standards, and compliance requirements.
Capability Development

  • Attract and hire top Salesforce Marketing Cloud engineering talent.
  • Ensure Ascension is enabled to be a leader in personalized healthcare engagement through your thought leadership and team development.
  • Build relationships with Salesforce product and engineering teams to influence the product roadmap and advocate for Ascension's needs.
  • Foster a culture of growth, enabling team members to pursue broader and deeper skills within their area of expertise.
Complexity of Work
  • High level of leadership, technical depth, and emotional intelligence required to lead a multi-disciplinary engineering organization.
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical guidance with strategic, long-term vision.
  • Demonstrated experience navigating complex business and technology landscapes to drive platform adoption and business outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 12 years in software engineering with at least 6 years leading engineering teams
Salesforce Expertise:

  • Proven experience leading Salesforce Marketing Cloud engineering teams
  • Deep understanding of Marketing Cloud architecture and products (Journey Builder, Personalization, Data Cloud, Intelligence, APIs, and integrations)
  • Salesforce Marketing Cloud certifications preferred
