Job Summary:
The Nuclear Fire Protection Program Specialist reports to the USO Support Procedure & Program Lead and is focused on the fire protection program. In this role, you will act as a Program Specialist for reactor projects or other highly technical projects. This position requires a high potential individual who will focus on fire protection program aspects of the reactors currently being developed, including NEIL program requirements. The successful candidate will coordinate with engineers working on systems, components, or engineering analyses related to nuclear plant fire protection. The Program Specialist will work as part of a high-performing team of engineers and scientists.
Responsibilities

  • Standup the fire protection program.
  • Develop program procedures which can be used to develop fire program engineering, maintenance, and operations procedures.
  • Coordinating with Nuclear Electric Insurance Limited (NEIL) to assist in the modification of NEIL requirements based upon the needs of a sodium cooled fast reactor plant.
  • Provide support to NRC licensing questions for conventional and sodium fire protection.
  • Provide emergency response development support.
  • Responsible for supporting geographically diverse design team members to develop the fire protection analyses. The team is composed of employees, subcontracted resources, partner employees, and customers.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and refinement of plant level and system level requirements, specifications, and strategy documents related to fire protection system design, as well as operations and maintenance activities over the lifecycle of a nuclear facility.
  • Develop and implement plant fire protection strategies.
  • Coordinate with outside organizations (INPO, NEI, etc.) to ensure industry best practices are being used and to influence the development of industry standards for advanced reactors.
  • Development outlines, methodologies, response guidelines for fire brigade field aids and response procedures.
  • Provide corporate level fire protection support to the nuclear power plant site.
  • Participate in design efforts to evaluate plant integrated control and transient event responses and provide recommendations/optimizations related to nuclear plant fires and fire hazards to influence design.
  • Support the design of fire protection systems, including the design of the fire prevention, detection, and suppression systems.
  • Support design reviews and resolution of cross functional technical concerns as a Subject Matter Expert in fire protection.
  • Ensure that licensing and code requirements are clearly established and implemented in the design, including development of regulatory submittal documents such as topical reports and safety analysis report sections.
  • Interface with design disciplines to identify and develop design information and specify system design and performance criteria related to fire protection systems.
  • Support continuous learning and application of nuclear industry best practices to maintain the highest quality of engineering design and proactively identify process change/enhancement opportunities.
  • Develop applicable sections related to the fire protection program in the Operating License Application.
  • Support testing of conventional and sodium FP SSCs that may be needed to support/validate engineering and licensing requirements.

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • B.S. degree in an engineering or science discipline from an accredited university OR 8 years of experience in fire protection analysis.
  • 5+ years experience in commercial nuclear fire protection engineering.
  • Knowledge of the implementing requirements for and licensing basis criteria for nuclear fire protection programs.
  • Experience developing and/or approving nuclear plant fire protection procedures is preferred.
  • Experience developing long-term project management schedules is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the nuclear regulations, plant work control processes, operational design philosophies, and integrated plant operations during normal and off-normal events.
  • Strong understanding of 10CFR50.48, RG 1.189, NFPA Standards, and NEIL Loss Prevention Program.
  • Knowledge of Risk Informed methodologies for integrated plant design or similar probabilistic methods in design, desired but not required.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills, including periodic training development and presentation.
  • Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
  • Candidate must be a high potential, self-starter and possess ability to coordinate and lead a team s effort with minimal direction.
  • Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
  • Ability to work on tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1.
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.

Estimated compensation for WA State residents = $45.00 - $70.00/hr
