We are looking for a talented and driven Backend Engineering Lead / Engineering Manager to join a fast-growing AI-focused product team in New York City. This hybrid role combines hands-on backend development with technical leadership and people management. You'll play a critical role in building the infrastructure behind cutting-edge, AI-driven legal technology and leading a team through rapid growth and scaling.
As an Engineering Lead, you will guide the engineering team in delivering robust backend systems and APIs, while setting the direction for software architecture, best practices, and team culture. You'll work cross-functionally with product and design stakeholders to shape the roadmap and deliver impactful features. This is an exciting opportunity to have full ownership from inception to deployment in a high-trust, collaborative environment.

Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a strong emphasis on backend development (Python)
- 1+ years in a technical leadership or engineering management role within a product-focused environment
- Proven ability to design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems and APIs
- Experience mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and fostering a feedback-rich team culture
- Deep knowledge of system performance, reliability, and observability best practices
- Strong collaboration skills across engineering, product, and design teams
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field
- Experience working with data-intensive systems and low-latency architectures
- Familiarity with AI/ML pipelines and unstructured data processing
- Background in legal tech or enterprise SaaS is a plus
- Experience with hiring and scaling engineering teams
- 90% Backend Development (Python, FastAPI)
- 10% Frontend/Infra Oversight
- 80% New Feature Development
- 20% Maintenance and Optimization
- Salary Range: $160,000 - $220,000
- Bonus eligible
- Hybrid work schedule (2 days in office - NYC)
