Job Overview:

We are seeking an experienced COBOL Mainframe Developer to support a key Medicaid modernization initiative. This role requires candidates to work onsite in Jefferson City, Missouri, two days per week, with the remaining days remote. The ideal candidate will bring extensive COBOL development expertise on mainframe systems, with prior healthcare project experience. Experience supporting a Medicaid project is a strong plus.

Responsibilities:

  • COBOL Development: Design, code, test, and maintain COBOL programs for mainframe applications supporting Medicaid functions
  • Mainframe Systems: Utilize mainframe technologies to ensure application performance, scalability, and reliability
  • MMIS Enhancements: Support and enhance Medicaid MMIS modules and interfaces in compliance with state and federal guidelines
  • Analysis and Troubleshooting: Analyze business requirements and legacy systems to deliver effective COBOL solutions; identify and resolve technical issues in a timely manner
  • Collaboration: Partner with business analysts, systems analysts, QA testers, and other developers to integrate COBOL applications into broader Medicaid enterprise systems
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation for all development activities to ensure knowledge transfer and support future maintenance
  • Testing & Optimization: Perform unit testing and implement performance improvements as needed to ensure application efficiency and compliance

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • 5+ years of COBOL programming experience on mainframe systems
  • Prior experience with a healthcare-related project is required
  • Experience working with large-scale, complex legacy systems in healthcare or government sectors
  • Familiarity with JCL, DB2, CICS, and other mainframe utilities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment
  • Prior experience supporting a Medicaid system is highly desirable
