Overview

DecisionPoint seeks a Database Security Engineer to support the security posture, hardening, and continuous monitoring of enterprise database systems within a secure federal and DoD-aligned mission environment. This role ensures all databases meet IL5 security requirements through encryption, auditing, STIG compliance, secure configuration baselines, vulnerability remediation, and RMF artifact support.

The Database Security Engineer will work closely with DBAs, cybersecurity teams, and infrastructure engineers to maintain a fully compliant and resilient database security environment across development, test, staging, and production systems.

This position is fully remote.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Database Security Engineer will:

  • Implement and maintain IL5-compliant database security controls, including encryption, auditing, and access control.
  • Apply and verify database STIGs, secure configurations, and hardening baselines.
  • Monitor security logs, anomalous activity, and audit events across SQL, MySQL, Oracle, or other database platforms.
  • Coordinate vulnerability scans, patch planning, remediation actions, and verification steps.
  • Support RMF documentation, including SSP updates, POA&M inputs, and AU/AC/SC control evidence.
  • Collaborate with DBAs to ensure secure schema designs, privileged account management, and secure data flows.
  • Integrate database security requirements into release cycles, deployments, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Maintain database security dashboards, metrics, logs, and compliance reporting.
  • Troubleshoot database security issues and coordinate corrective actions with technical teams.
  • Participate in incident response activities involving data systems, including triage, containment, and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure database backup, storage, and archival processes follow secure data handling and encryption standards.
  • Provide input to modernization efforts, cloud migration initiatives, and Zero Trust data security alignment.
Qualifications

Clearance Requirement

Must hold an active Top Secret clearance, supported by a Tier 5 background investigation.

Education (Required)

Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Assurance, Computer Science, or a related technical field.

Experience (Required)

  • Minimum 7 years of cybersecurity or database security engineering experience.
  • Experience implementing IL5 or equivalent high-security database controls.
  • Experience applying STIGs, secure baselines, and hardening methodologies.
  • Experience with database auditing, encryption, logging, and access control.
  • Experience supporting RMF artifacts, SSP updates, and POA&M remediation actions.
  • Experience troubleshooting vulnerabilities, scan findings, and patching requirements.


Technical Knowledge (Required)

  • Strong understanding of relational database platforms (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL).
  • Knowledge of DoD cybersecurity frameworks, STIGs, RMF controls, and log auditing requirements.
  • Proficiency with database encryption, secure storage, and privileged access management.
  • Familiarity with SIEM tools, log analysis, and database monitoring tools.
  • Experience with vulnerability scanners and compliance validation tools.

Technical Knowledge (Preferred)

  • Experience supporting Zero Trust data protection and secure data flows.
  • Familiarity with cloud database services (AWS RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, etc.).
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps tooling, CI/CD security integration, or automation scripting.


Certifications

Required:

  • CompTIA Security+

Preferred:

  • CISSP
  • CCSP
  • Vendor database security certifications (Oracle, Microsoft, AWS)


Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills for diagnosing database security issues.
  • Excellent communication skills for coordination with DBAs, cybersecurity teams, and government stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining secure, compliant databases.
  • Ability to produce clear security documentation, artifact evidence, and audit support materials.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment.
