Job overview and responsibilities
This position leads the engineering strategy and execution for a collection of United Airlines' core platform services, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance across critical IT systems that power the airline's operations. The role is responsible for advancing United's cloud infrastructure, continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) capabilities, and site reliability engineering (SRE) practices to support a secure, high-performing, and resilient technology ecosystem. By driving automation, modern DevOps methodologies, and platform efficiency, this position enables faster innovation and operational excellence across enterprise systems.

The role is responsible for advancing United's cloud infrastructure, continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) capabilities, and site reliability engineering (SRE) practices to support a secure, high-performing, and resilient technology ecosystem. By driving automation, modern DevOps methodologies, and platform efficiency, this position enables faster innovation and operational excellence across enterprise systems.
- Provide strategic and technical leadership for cloud, platform, and DevOps engineering initiatives, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture standards, AWS best practices, and United Airlines' reliability, scalability, and performance goals
- Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) templates and CI/CD pipelines to enable secure, automated, and compliant deployment of cloud-native applications across multiple environments
- Lead and develop a high-performing team of platform, DevOps, and SRE engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and technical excellence through coaching, mentoring, and skill development
- Ensure the reliability, observability, and cost efficiency of enterprise cloud platforms, implementing SRE principles, monitoring frameworks, and proactive performance and incident management
- Collaborate with application development and architecture teams to review designs, guide solution architecture, and ensure adherence to cloud and platform standards across United's Digital Retail Platforms
- Drive adoption of automation and modernization initiatives, evaluating emerging tools and technologies to streamline delivery, improve developer experience, and enhance system resilience
- Manage vendor and partner relationships, ensuring delivery quality, adherence to service-level objectives, and optimized utilization of external and internal resources supporting cloud operations
Qualifications
What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelor's degree
- Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field preferred
- AWS Associate-level certification (Solutions Architect, Developer, or SysOps)
- 7+ years of relevant experience in software engineering, DevOps, or platform/cloud engineering
- Experience leading technical teams
- Deep understanding of AWS architecture, cloud infrastructure, networking, and security best practices
- Expertise in CI/CD pipeline tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, TeamCity) and Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks (e.g., AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform)
- Proficiency in one or more scripting/programming languages such as Python, Bash, Java, or C#
- Strong knowledge of DevOps methodologies, containerization (Docker, ECS, EKS), and microservices architecture
- Experience implementing SRE principles including observability, automation, and incident management
- Proven ability to lead and develop technical teams, manage cross-functional initiatives, and deliver results in complex enterprise environments
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master's degree or 6 years of relevant work experience in Cloud Computing, Software Engineering, or a related advanced technical discipline
- AWS Professional-level certification, Kubernetes certification (CKA/CKAD), or equivalent advanced cloud credentials
- 5+ years of progressive experience in enterprise-scale cloud and DevOps environments, with 3+ years in leadership or managerial roles
- Experience with hybrid or multi-cloud strategies
- Familiarity with FinOps and cloud cost optimization practices
- Background in large-scale modernization or digital transformation programs
- Understanding of airline or transportation industry technology environments
