Description
We are looking for a skilled Substation Design Engineer III to join our team on a long-term contract basis. This position requires a highly motivated and meticulous individual to oversee substation design projects and ensure compliance with established standards. While primarily remote, candidates must reside near Allentown, Pennsylvania, and be available for monthly team meetings and occasional site visits.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the lead responsible engineer, overseeing Engineer of Choice (EOC) design projects and ensuring alignment with organizational standards.
Coordinate information flow among various functional teams and external engineering firms.
Conduct thorough quality assurance reviews of design and engineering packages, providing constructive feedback from the owner's perspective.
Ensure substation design packages adhere to established specifications and industry standards.
Develop and manage engineering schedules and cost estimates to support project execution.
Review and approve substation change control documentation in PowerBase, ensuring commissioning sign-offs and required tasks are completed.
Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) during project development, engineering, and construction phases.
Support procurement processes for major long-lead equipment essential to project timelines.
Collaborate closely with project and contract management teams to deliver safe, cost-effective, and constructible designs.
Provide technical guidance to newer engineers, translating complex design concepts into actionable insights.
Requirements
Minimum of 5 years of experience in utility substation design, including physical, electrical, protection, and control systems.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage across various work groups and organizational levels.
Proven ability to simplify complex design concepts for less experienced engineers.
Solid understanding of industry standards relevant to substation design, such as NERC and SCADA.
Familiarity with civil and structural engineering principles as they apply to substations.
Valid driver's license and the ability to travel for site visits within the service territory.
Preferred experience with legacy substation standards from National Grid or similar organizations.
