JOB SUMMARY
The organization operates a large-scale transportation network across the New York City Metropolitan area, southern New York, Long Island, and Connecticut. This infrastructure includes subways, rail systems, tunnels, elevated structures, bus yards, depots, stations, and maintenance facilities.
The HQ Office of Security oversees the enterprise security program for multiple transit agencies (NYCT, LIRR, MNR, MTAPD) and ensures projects are delivered with strong security measures to safeguard customers, employees, and physical assets.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The GIS Developer will support the development and enhancement of geospatial data by integrating drawings, maps, and other data sources to accurately locate security camera assets across all transit facilities.
The project aims to build a GIS-enabled environment that visualizes the enterprise video management system, allowing users to quickly identify camera locations using place names and physical entity references (e.g., bus stops, rail platforms, station levels). It also includes organizing complex multi-level facility mapping data.
Additionally, the resource will contribute to other geospatial security initiatives, including:
Development of an all-agency GIS map for security assets used in incident dashboards
BI data fusion & data integration projects
UAS (drone/UAS) airspace management mapping
Other enterprise geospatial security efforts
RESPONSIBILITIES
Catalog and organize agency-wide GIS data; collaborate with internal GIS teams to collect, validate, and confirm completeness of mapping datasets
Gather currently available camera location references (latitude/longitude or alternate location identifiers) and convert them into a standardized GIS dataset
Perform georeferencing workflows to incorporate non-GIS drawings such as floorplans, as-builts, CAD schematics, and facility documents into geospatial environments
Register and document GIS datasets, including camera locations, and support creation of a GIS data warehouse that can link to the Enterprise Video Management System using unique camera IDs
Provide geospatial mapping support for security incident tracking dashboards and UAS airspace visualization
Work closely with security end users to understand mapping requirements and provide geospatial technical support
Create and maintain design diagrams using MS Office tools such as Visio and other diagramming applications
REQUIREMENTS
Must work onsite at the designated location (no remote/telework)
May require travel to additional transit operating offices or field locations
Must be able to work a flexible schedule
Work hours: Not to exceed 37.5 hours per week, 48 weeks per year
Must possess strong communication skills
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
The candidate must have the following:
Minimum 3 years of experience using ESRI ArcGIS (preferably ArcGIS Pro and related add-ons)
Solid understanding of GIS and mapping fundamentals
Minimum 2 years of experience performing large-scale GIS ETL operations (Extract, Transform, Load), including hands-on georeferencing knowledge
Experience developing GIS applications using REST APIs and ArcGIS-supported protocols (e.g., StoryMaps, ArcGIS packages, or mapping apps)
Familiarity with mapping file formats, including CAD, BIM, KML/KMZ, Google KMZ/KML
Understanding of SQL operations and geospatial analysis/query techniques
Knowledge of transportation service regions across NYC Metro, Long Island, Southern NY, and Connecticut
Proficiency in MS Office tools (including Visio) and diagramming applications
