Job Details

Job Title: UNIX System Administrator
Location: Sacramento, CA (100% Remote)
Contract Duration: 12 Months


Position Overview

The UNIX System Administrator will support the administration, maintenance, upgrade, and troubleshooting of AIX/IBM and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems across an enterprise environment. This role will ensure UNIX infrastructure reliability, security, and performance while supporting system migrations, lifecycle operations, and documentation efforts.


Key Responsibilities

<>1. AIX / IBM Power Systems Administration</>
  • Perform day-to-day support, maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting of AIX systems, VIOS, HMCs, and Managed Systems.

  • Provision and manage AIX virtual servers using PowerVM virtualization technology.

  • Administer AIX LPARs within PowerHA clustered environments.

  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and implement security remediation measures.

  • Plan, execute, and validate IBM Power system lifecycle and platform migrations.

  • Integrate AIX Logical Partitions (LPARs) with CMDB for accurate tracking of IT assets.

  • Support application migrations from AIX/IBM platforms to:

    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) on x86, or

    • Cloud-based hosting environments.

<>2. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Administration</>
  • Administer, patch, upgrade, and troubleshoot RHEL systems.

  • Identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities to maintain enterprise compliance.

<>3. Documentation & Asset Management</>
  • Maintain detailed system documentation including configurations, procedures, and architecture diagrams.

  • Ensure all changes align with governance, audit, and policy requirements.

<>4. Collaboration & Operational Support</>
  • Work with cross-functional teams including infrastructure, security, and application support groups.

  • Participate in outage response, performance tuning, and capacity planning.

  • Contribute to automation, process improvements, and standard operating procedures.

<>5. Additional Duties</>
  • Perform other IT infrastructure support tasks and project-based assignments as needed.


Mandatory Qualifications

Candidates must meet all of the following:

  • 5+ years experience supporting server infrastructure in an enterprise environment.

  • 5+ years experience administering IBM AIX systems.

  • Strong experience building, patching, and supporting:

    • AIX

    • PowerHA

    • HMC

    • VIOS

    • Managed Systems

  • Experience troubleshooting AIX environments in production settings.

  • Experience working with IBM PowerVM virtualization.

  • Experience with system build processes in virtualized environments.

  • Experience using monitoring tools for preventative maintenance and issue resolution.

  • Experience hardening UNIX/Linux operating systems to meet security standards.


Preferred / Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with shell scripting or programming (e.g., Bash, KornShell).

  • Experience with:

    • IBM BigFix Patch Management

    • IBM Tivoli Monitoring

    • Ansible Automation

  • Experience with physical server hardware troubleshooting.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills related to AIX and IBM Power environments.

  • Experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux in an enterprise environment.
