Job Description: Senior Platform Architect - MuleSoft
Location: Springfield, IL(Remote)

Role Overview
We are seeking a highly accomplished Senior Platform Architect with deep expertise in MuleSoft and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Azure API Management (APIM) to lead enterprise-scale API and integration initiatives. This role will provide strategic leadership, architectural oversight, and hands-on guidance across the full API lifecycle, ensuring scalability, performance, and governance for mission-critical systems. The ideal candidate will bring a strong blend of technical depth, enterprise integration experience, and leadership skills, with the ability to define and execute an API strategy that aligns with enterprise architecture principles.
Key Responsibilities
API Architecture & Strategy
- Lead API architecture, design, and coding for enterprise integrations across critical platforms.
- Define and execute the end-to-end API lifecycle including design, development best practices, versioning, deployment, monitoring, and governance.
- Collaborate with enterprise architecture teams to establish and evolve API governance frameworks, security models, and performance optimization strategies.
- Partner with stakeholders to shape the API strategy across MuleSoft and APIM, ensuring consistency, scalability, and alignment with organizational objectives.
Platform Optimization & Governance
- Perform a comprehensive review and optimization of ~25+ existing enterprise APIs on MuleSoft, driving improvements in design, performance, security, and compliance.
- Lead a MuleSoft platform assessment to enhance scalability, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Provide leadership in the MuleSoft Cloud Hub 1.0 to 2.0 migration, ensuring adoption of new features and best practices.
- Support hybrid coexistence and migration planning between MuleSoft and Microsoft APIM.
- Establish enterprise-wide standards and best practices for API security, monitoring, logging, and lifecycle governance.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor and guide developers, providing architectural oversight for API implementations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in multi-vendor and hybrid cloud environments.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment and adoption of integration strategies.
- Eventually take the enterprise ownership of both MuleSoft and APIM platforms as part of broader API governance.
Key Skills & Experience
MuleSoft (Must-Have)
- 12-15+ years in software engineering, integration, or enterprise systems, with 5-7 years in an architect role.
- Strong expertise in Mule 4, Anypoint Platform, CloudHub (1.0 & 2.0), API Manager, Runtime Manager, Exchange, RAML, DataWeave, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Proven experience as an API Architect (3+ years) designing and governing large-scale enterprise integrations.
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps and Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Prior experience in government or regulated environments is highly desirable.
Microsoft APIM (Preferred)
- Hands-on experience with API gateways, policies, subscriptions, developer portal, monitoring, and security.
- Strong understanding of the Azure ecosystem including Functions, Logic Apps, Event Grid, Service Bus, Key Vault, and Application Insights.
General Skills
- Deep expertise in API governance, security, and performance optimization.
- Strong knowledge of OAuth 2.0, JWT, OpenID Connect, SAML, and related API security practices.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
- Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
- Ability to operate in multi-vendor, hybrid cloud environments.
Certifications (Preferred but not mandatory)
- MuleSoft Certified Platform Architect
- MuleSoft Certified Integration Architect
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
