We are seeking a full-time Senior Software Engineer Outdoor in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for developing software to support our next generation of outdoor handhelds, wearables, golf, and sportsman platforms using cutting-edge technologies while ensuring that our products are optimized for low power and maintain the exceptional performance that our users expect.
Essential Functions
- Develops moderately complex software in C, C++, assembly language, or other selected languages for Garmin products consistently following Garmin's coding standards and in accordance with applicable software development methodology and release processes
- Utilizes software engineering tools such as configuration management systems, build processes, and debuggers in the software development process
- Creates and executes designs for new functionalities as part of a software project
- May perform as a technical leader or Lead Software Engineer for a complex software project
- Collaborates and adds value through participation in peer code reviews, providing comments and suggestions
- Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
- Performs technical root cause analysis and outlines corrective action for given problems
- Contributes to advanced technical research on new technologies
- Serves as a mentor to less experienced software engineers (Software Engineer 1 & 2)
- Estimates level of effort, evaluate new options of similar technology, offer suggestions to improve processes, and provide comments on some electrical design aspects
- Works collaboratively and professionally with other Garmin associates in cross functional teams to achieve goals
- Applies a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
- Applies Garmin's Mission Statement and Quality Policy and enthusiastically exhibit a desire to see Garmin succeed
- Associates are expected to integrate, use, and provide feedback on products in development when possible as part of their normal job responsibilities
- Reviews product and/or application information including manuals and brochures for technical accuracy
- Participates in product and/or application definition activities including feature analysis and system tradeoffs
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Demonstrated proficiency with designing well architectured software systems and modules that support new technology or improve capability/performance of existing functionality
- Demonstrated competence with researching fundamental problems and implementing appropriate algorithmic solutions
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a lead software engineer for a complex software project
- Ability to decompose functional requirements into well-defined tasks while balancing quality, quantity, and complexity in work output
- Demonstrated capability to offer peer technical assessments in areas of expertise, new technologies and software designs
- Mastered proficiency in writing software in C, C++ and relevant experience and/or training in data structures or object-oriented design methodology
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
