General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting career opportunity for an Electrical Engineer to join our team at GA-ASI in San Diego, CA (Poway, CA). We are looking for someone with drive, talent, and experience in complex circuit board design and layout using the Mentor Graphics PADS software design suite who also thrives in a fast-paced, Research and Development (R&D) environment. This role supports projects at all lifecycle stages, encompassing R&D (the majority focus), proven designs that are being productized and released, and fielded products.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Execute technical concepts, strategies, and plans quickly and work with general supervision.
  • The Engineer is required to collaborate with Electrical Computer Aided Design (ECAD) group, software engineering, mechanical engineering and manufacturing groups.
  • A broad knowledge base is desired as circuit board designs encompass high-speed digital, analog, and high power designs. Knowledge of RF design is a plus.
  • It is required to perform design reviews (requirements, preliminary design, schematic, layout, test plan) throughout the design cycle with the program stakeholders and independent reviewers.
  • The Engineer must be capable of reading through datasheets and managing design trade studies in a dynamic engineering environment.
  • Experience with developing thorough design requirements and verification methodologies is required.
  • It is required to understand test methods and techniques to ensure quality builds. Familiarity with DFx (fabrication, assembly, test & rework) is a plus.
  • The expectation of this position is to validate conformity to design standards and specifications with the use of test equipment or analysis.
  • The Engineer must be familiar with using lab equipment such as signal generators, multi-meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, etc.
  • Grasp, understand, and correlate many pieces of a complex system concurrently and be able to identify, construct, document, and troubleshoot dependencies, relationships, and logical processes in a clear, organized, methodical manner.
  • Electrical CAD experience for schematic capture is required. Experience with PADS and/or Altium is considered a plus.
  • Familiarity with IPC Library standards is desired.
  • Understanding of high-speed routing techniques to preserve signal integrity is desired.
  • The use of simulation tools such as Siemens HyperLynx or Ansys HFSS is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Gerber viewers is a plus.
  • Capable of being a team player and contributing to the success of the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills enabling efficient communication with other engineers, program stakeholders, fabricators, contract manufacturers, and customers.
  • Skilled in via structures, PCB laminates, and PCB construction is a plus.
  • The job scope while primarily Engineering design may also include parts kitting, BOM management, component procurement, drawing updates/releases, integration support, and troubleshooting.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a Bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a Masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to understand concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving design process.
  • Must be able to organize, schedule, and complete projects efficiently and on time.
  • Must have strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills while being able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and test electronic assemblies is a must.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOD Security Clearance is required.
