Our Gridtern Program provides current college students the ability to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun!

Available Roles

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) (Northborough, MA)

Our Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) team is responsible for unlocking real-time data, enabling smarter grid operations, and delivering exceptional customer experiences. As the digital backbone of a modern utility, this team is made up of product leaders driving bold innovations in the future of energy.

As a Gridtern, you will work with the Snowflake data repository to query and analyze data from AMI meters. You will also attend daily team meetings to gather and understand requirements. In this role, you will have the opportunity to utilize tools such as SQL, data analysis, report writing, Snowflake, and Matillion to support your work and gain valuable technical experience.

NE CNI Electric Applications (Northborough, MA)

Our New England Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Electric Applications team is essential for ensuring the reliable and secure operation of our electric grid in real time. They maintain the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) infrastructure, manage software updates, ensure secure communications, and support real-time contingency analysis that helps operators prevent grid failures. This team is central to modern energy management, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards like NERC CIP and collaborating with vendors and internal teams to resolve issues and implement system enhancements.

As a Gridtern, you'll gain hands-on experience by helping to streamline and modernize our EMS system across the organization. You will identify and document data inconsistencies, assist with cleaning up outdated data points, and review database calculations to improve accuracy and reliability. Additionally, you will remove unnecessary communication records related to legacy functionality and outdated sources. This internship will offer the opportunity to develop technical problem-solving skills, learn about the operation of critical infrastructure systems, and make a meaningful impact on the future of energy management.

New England Safety, Health, and Assurance (Northborough, MA)

Our New England Safety Health and Assurance team is essential in promoting a safe, healthy, and productive environment for 7,000 employees in the New England region. Comprising licensed Occupational Health Nurses, the team conducts vital medical evaluations, including new hire physicals, annual exams, and return-to-work assessments, ensuring employees are fit for duty and compliant with regulatory standards. Additionally, our Occupational Wellness Specialists support a holistic initiative that integrates workplace safety with overall employee wellbeing, addressing physical, mental, and emotional health through proactive strategies, education, and support services. Together, this team cultivates a culture of health and safety that reflects our commitment to caring for employees as whole individuals.

As a Gridtern, you will learn how health and wellness are strategically integrated into our operations and how this contributes to long-term organizational success. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage in impactful health and safety initiatives while gaining hands-on experience in data analytics and program development within a dynamic utility environment. You will also assist in enhancing reporting dashboards to improve visibility into key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop new visual displays using PowerBI and other data visualization tools to identify trends and highlight areas for program improvement.

What You'll Need

  • Availability to start on the program start date, June 15, 2026, and work full-time (40 hours a week) for the duration of the summer
  • Must be registered as a full-time student and continue your education full-time through the Fall 2026 semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, or Master's degree
  • Majoring in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Technology, Engineering, Data Science, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Health Informatics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or related majors.
  • Have accumulated 18 or more credits and be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver's license with a safe driving history that complies with National Grid's Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be specified in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$20.00-$32.00 an hour

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
