What You Will Do

The Nuclear Systems group (NEN-5) is seeking an R&D Engineer 3 with flexible analytic skills to create and apply decision support tools covering multiple wide-ranging subject areas as part of the Applied Modeling and Stockpile Support team.

The Applied Modeling and Stockpile Support team supports multiple customers by creating analytical tools and performing analysis to support programmatic decisions and formulation of policy. The team works closely with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) leadership, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and stakeholders across the nuclear weapons complex to understand decisions related to strategic planning and collaboratively develops tools that can support those stakeholders. The team includes a diverse set of backgrounds and provides a creative environment for providing data analysis and creating visualization and information tools across areas that span nuclear weapons stockpile planning, treaty monitoring, civilian nuclear power, and more.

As an R&D Engineer 3, your responsibilities will include:

  • Demonstrating expertise in modeling and simulation across multiple disciplines, which may include nuclear science or engineering, computational thermal, structural, or fluid dynamics, nuclear fuels and materials, nuclear chemistry, process modeling, nonproliferation, stockpile analysis, or related research fields.
  • Developing innovative and advanced concepts, theories, methodologies, techniques, or approaches to solve complex and specialized technical challenges.
  • Providing leadership in technical decision-making at the task level within projects, making decisions and recommendations that directly impact the achievement of key programmatic goals.
  • Mentoring junior staff and students, supporting their growth and development as emerging researchers in the field.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Technical Knowledge
In-depth technical knowledge of nuclear systems, along with understanding physical, economic, and political environments in which they are deployed.

Understanding of U.S. Government Mission and Policy Frameworks
Familiarity of the mission space and decision processes of US Government agencies including statutory constraints of those agencies

Analytical Expertise
Proven experience in performing decision analysis studies including analyses of alternatives and trade-off studies
Stakeholder Driven Thinking
Demonstrated ability to understand and respond to stakeholder needs across multiple U.S. Government agencies by contributing to the development of targeted, agency-specific analytical products.
Advanced Communication and Presentation Skills
Experience communicating technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders, including national and international audiences. Lead preparation of major proposals to internal or external programmatic sponsors, or for laboratory directed research and development.
Mentorship
Ability to actively mentor junior staff and students.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical field of study) from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a PhD may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with system-level modeling concepts and tools.
  • Experience with risk analysis, statistics, and uncertainty quantification methods.
  • Programming in Python, C++, Java, Matlab , Visual Basic, or similar language.
  • Experience with advanced computing architectures.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more areas of nuclear science or engineering such as: nuclear systems, reactor design, or high-fidelity reactor simulations.
  • Experience in complex systems modeling, including analysis, optimization, uncertainty, or sensitivity analysis.
  • Familiarity with material processing, fabrication, or metallurgy.
  • Familiarity with risk analysis and programmatic planning tools.
  • Familiarity with nuclear security concepts.
  • Active Q clearance.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires ship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
