Description & Requirements
The energy of a newsroom, the precision of a control room, the resilience of a data center - we work with urgency and care to create environments that perform. Our workplaces are fast-moving, high-functioning, and designed to support everything from daily operations to critical systems. At Bloomberg, our buildings don't just house our teams - they reflect our values of innovation, responsibility, resilience and efficiency. Therefore, sustainability is at every level of facilities operations, from infrastructure to soft services.
What's the Role?
At the heart of our sustainability strategy lies infrastructure-the foundation upon which all environmental progress is built. Bloomberg's commitment to resilient, future-ready infrastructure starts with the systems that sustain our global operations. By advancing our infrastructure, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also enhance reliability, performance, and adaptability across our portfolio. Bloomberg's science-based net-zero target drives us to transform our facilities by reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 90 percent by 2040 (from a 2018 baseline). We continually refine our infrastructure management, ensuring that our buildings and services are optimized to deliver on ambitious sustainability goals without ever compromising system, performance, uptime, or the workplace experience.
Bloomberg's Global Infrastructure, Data Center & Workplace Sustainability teams manage the performance of our buildings and services in more than 160 locations worldwide including our mission critical datacenters. We support day-to-day maintenance and operations, and capital improvements. We work closely with the Global Sustainability Office (GSO) and other internal partners to operationalize Bloomberg's ESG strategy and deliver against enterprise-wide sustainability commitments.
We are seeking an operationally minded Sustainability Engineer to lead the delivery of sustainability initiatives across our real estate portfolio. This role focuses on further embedding sustainability into the core of building infrastructure, systems operations, and facilities services - with a particular emphasis on energy, water, waste, and materials.
While working alongside our internal teams and stakeholders this role will be critical in ensuring our sites are not only efficient and compliant, but also resilient and future-ready - especially in mission-critical environments such as data centers.
We'll Trust You To:
Oversee global operational sustainability initiatives from planning through implementation and performance monitoring.
Collaborate deeply with the Global Sustainability Office who set our goals, corporate strategy and policy.
Drive building and system energy & water efficiencies via targeted upgrades, optimization, and procurement.
Use regional platforms to track resource use and evaluate capex & opex projects for efficiency.
Improve PUE, optimize critical infrastructure, without compromise to resilience and redundancy.
Partner with Engineering and Procurement on alternative energy solutions, such as on-site renewables, energy storage and waste heat recovery.
Reduce operational impact by advising on material sourcing and sustainable design standards.
Manage waste & recycling programs, conducting audits, and enhancing vendor performance through data analysis.
Support sustainability certifications and behavior change through training and communication.
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and facilitate ESG reporting with accurate data.
Support and develop impactful sustainability initiatives to foster environmental awareness and collaboration throughout the firm.
Integrate sustainability KPIs into vendor service contracts and monitor related operations.
Champion decarbonization strategies with stakeholders to achieve measurable results.
You'll Need to Have:
Bachelor's degree in a related engineering discipline - preferably MEP.
Minimum of 7 years of facilities infrastructure or data center sustainability experience, supporting your strong understanding of MEP systems and how they relate to energy, water, and carbon performance.
Demonstrated success in implementing sustainability initiatives with measurable outcomes.
Excellent project management, executive presentation and communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience supporting compliance with environmental regulations and internal governance standards.
Certifications such as LEED AP, WELL AP, CEM, or equivalent.
Experience managing sustainability and resiliency in data centers or mission-critical facilities.
We'd love to see
Familiarity with ESG frameworks and reporting tools (e.g., CDP, GRESB, SBTi, TCFD), and building certification submissions.
Knowledge of sustainable procurement practices and lifecycle carbon assessments.
