TxDOT work to be accomplished:
The DBA was responsible for a wide range of daily operational tasks critical to maintaining the health and performance of over 100 SQL Server databases across 102 servers. Activities included monitoring system resources and identifying expensive queries, reviewing SQL Server and Windows logs for anomalies, and managing scheduled jobs and notifications. The role involved troubleshooting SSRS reporting issues, performing real-time problem resolution, managing user permissions, and supporting data migrations and upgrades from legacy SQL Server versions. The DBA also conducted performance tuning, index analysis, and space management based on alerts, while collaborating with various teams on ETL processes, SSIS package updates, and application support. Security responsibilities included implementing access controls and ensuring data protection for applications like CCURE9000. Additionally, the DBA supported development efforts by assisting with schema refinement, query optimization, and pre-production code reviews, while actively participating in project meetings and knowledge transfer sessions.
Minimum Yrs of Experience Skills/Experience
8 SQL Server Administration: Extensive experience managing large-scale SQL Server environments, including installation, configuration, and version upgrades (e.g., SQL Server 2012/2016/2019).
8 Database Performance Monitoring & Tuning: Proven ability to monitor system health (CPU, memory, I/O), analyze slow-running queries, and optimize indexes, statistics, and query execution plans.
8 Backup & Recovery: Deep knowledge of backup strategies, disaster recovery planning, and restoration processes using native SQL Server tools and cloud-based platforms (e.g., Azure SQL).
8 Security & Access Control: Experience implementing role-based access, user authentication, encryption, and compliance with data protection standards.
8 ETL & SSIS Development: Strong background in managing and modernizing SSIS packages, supporting ETL workflows, and assisting developers with schema refinement and query tuning.
8 Job Scheduling & Automation: Skilled in creating and managing SQL Server Agent jobs, Notification Services, and automating routine maintenance tasks.
8 Log Analysis & Troubleshooting: Ability to interpret SQL Server, Windows system, application, and security logs to identify and resolve issues proactively.
8 Index & Storage Management: Experience conducting full index analysis, managing space utilization, and resolving storage-related alerts and bottlenecks.
8 Migration & Upgrade Projects: Hands-on experience planning and executing database migrations across environments and SQL Server versions, including dev/test/prod stacks.
8 SSRS & Reporting Services: Familiarity with configuring and troubleshooting SSRS environments to support reporting needs across teams.
8 Collaboration & Knowledge Transfer: Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with infrastructure, application, and security teams, and to document and share knowledge effectively.
8 Cloud Integration: Experience with Azure SQL, including BacPac file generation, cloud restoration, and hybrid environment support.
